This week researchers collaborating with the Discovery Channel captured rare footage of a 12-foot-long giant squid swimming in the deep waters of the Gulf of Mexico about 100 miles southeast of New Orleans. In the video, an enormous cephalopod can be seen swimming in the darkness before wrapping its tentacles around the team's Medusa stealth camera system. The researchers estimated the giant squid was likely only a juvenile. During their expedition, the teams' ship was also struck by lightning.

These are truly fascinating creatures and it's my understanding that they haven't even been caught on camera until somewhat recently. Makes me wonder what else is down there in those inky black depths waiting to be discovered.
