Genuinely useful humanoid robots coming?

"to deliver personal care and therapy."

This is one area the robots should NEVER be in, in my opinion. I know they are being touted as a viable means to keep the elderly from being "lonely"...hogwash say I! It's not human...it is NOT a replacement for human energy and love.

I get it. There are lonely people out there that can't (or won't) go out into the world for companionship. My heart goes out to them, but i have to agree you can't substitute human interaction with a robot. As far as replacing humans in the workforce, that's a terrible idea. The robot could perform their tasks but, humans need jobs too. With our population growing like wildfire, what will future humans do for work? With AI thrown into the mix, how long before humans become old hat? Daily dose of Soylent Green, anyone? It's Yummy! :fearscream:

It would be useful to people like my wife and I. We have no kids and like living in remote areas. So if a robot could possibly save our lives or drive us to the hospital I'm all for it.
We are pretty solitary people so a robot would be fine. It would be more like a tool so we could keep our independence. It could possibly over time advance enough to run medical test right from your home. So less if any trips to a doctors office.
I know I'm one of the few,but I'm cool with robots and such. Sure they can and will be used for good and evil. The benefits though are worth it.
To have a robot I could reliably leave the house with my wife and know the animals are in 100% safe hands! Not to mention clean, cook,do laundry, make home repairs, act as a physical security system, or preform live saving assistance,go to the grocery store...special car for it would be an add on...lol!
For me personally if something ever happened and it was just me I'd have no choice as to have a robot and smart home. I have no family or anyone to assist me.
All that said I can easily see where a robot wouldn't provide what actual human interactions would.

I think for dangerous jobs and lifting heavy things this could be a good tool as long as they stay out of personal care. Also, I think they need to keep them non personal, more of a machine not a human replica and give them a big off switch.

This is an aspect of robotics/AI I have been predicting for years.

In the TV series Star Trek Voyager the ship did not have a doctor, instead it had a holographic program that created an AI doctor in the medical bay. In the video game series Fallout they have a machine called an Auto-Doc which performs medical procedures, like healing wounds, removing radiation and reparing broken bones. In the first game it could even make you smarter, stronger, faster and better looking. I don't think a real life "Artificial Doctor" is all that far outside the realm of possibilities.

I'm envisioning paramedics in self driving ambulances partnered with a robot for lifting heavy things and providing medical assistance outside the vehicle. I also picture some sort of system inside the vehicle that uses a set of robotics limbs to perform tasks. Gyro stabilization coupled with a network interface would allow these arms to operate much better than a human in the back of a speeding ambulance as these arms would know the exact moment when the driving AI is going to brake, accelerate or turn a corner.

Wealthy people could afford to have such h machines installed somewhere in their own home providing 24 hour medical attention. Then less well off people, middle class blue collar types, would get access. At some point such a device could become a standard feature in every home by default.
