It doesn’t look like something that would go off on accident. It looks like it would have to be pulled on. I could see how the seatbelt might get caught on it though.
And having seen Russian seats, that's what I think happened.

Wow that must have been terrifying. I don’t know if I could have gotten on another flight so fast to finish the trip.

I just realized that the last time I flew on a commercial jet was 16 years ago. It's been a while!

I remember seeing "artist conceptions" of next generation a/c going back to the 1960s, seldom did they turn out to look much like what became operationally fielded systems.
