Making apple butter is bigtime, annual event in Mrs Duke's family, it's like a mini family reunion.
They make it out doors in a huge cauldron over an open fire, stirring all the while with a boat oar. Not an activity I particularly enjoy, I liken it to watching paint dry.
Bless them, it's quite the job. But I LOVE the fact they use the cauldron over an open fire! The boat oar is a great idea to stir that stuff...lol

Bless them, it's quite the job. But I LOVE the fact they use the cauldron over an open fire! The boat oar is a great idea to stir that stuff...lol
They also poured a roll of pennies into the cauldron. This was done to keep the apples/sauce from sticking to the bottom of the pot.

Old trick that works well. Hey, that family knows how to work with this stuff for sure!
