    ;)

The door had bells on a spring, they jingled when it opened and closed. There were smells of fresh plastic and peppermint and maybe roasted peanuts.

And there were things, wonderful things. A counter-top display of smoking pipes made by someone named "Doctor Grabow". Even adults pronounced it "Doctor Grabbo", which sounds a bit awful, many years later I found out that the surname is pronounced with the emphasis on the second syllable, "Gra-BOE". Much less alarming. And other things, flashlights, yo-yo's, things....

I loved the dime store when I was a kid. They had a lunch counter and I would have spaghetti and purple pop.
Then it was off to the toy aisle and the animals. Birds and turtles and rabbits ...
Today it is the dollar store. I just buy a bunch of stuff I don't need and it makes me happy:)

I know a lot of people who use the dollar store for stuff, but I rarely do. My son likes to go there for quick pickups of things. Now, the difference is some of these places have a lot of groceries, where the old dime stores did not have this kind of supply.

I can remember the old dime stores had a whole section for fabric and sewing supplies, which was often so busy someone was stationed back there to assist the ladies. A little bell sat on the counter to ring if you needed help. And the craft section was fairly large as well. As Paint mentioned, we used to visit the same dime store as kids! lol Birds, turtles, rabbits, fish....omg...I killed a few fish back then as a child....and good sized toy section.

Anybody remember the shoe repair shop? Back then, when you needed new heels on a shoe, or you had a problem, you didn't just go get another pair of shoes! You took them to the shoe repair shop, dropped them off, got your ticket for when it would be done and about a week later you had your shoes back.

In nearby Fairborn, Ohio, we still have a dime store called Foys. Although it's now primarily known for its Halloween supplies, Foys is like stepping back in time. It really hasn't changed since the 60s, and still has a candy and nuts counter where you buy by the pound. They also have a lunch counter next door with cheap, if not exactly great, eats.
