Time for another chapter of Debi's Wildlife...lol

We say goodnight to our groundhog friends who skedaddled into hibernation this month. The Dodge City gang disappeared right on schedule as the cool weather came along. Depending on weather, we should see them once again in March.

Meanwhile, the chipmunks have been defeated by the squirrels at the picnic table. We had two chippers who kept trying to steal the nuts from the squirrels who ended up being continuously thrown off by the squirrels. Haven't seen one attempt it again for over 5 days since they got sent to the kid's table at ground level.

Meanwhile, we have had many squirrel visits and a few who have learned to "knock" at the window to get more food. There are little pawprints all over that window but I managed to catch a rather blurry but cute pic of one of the "junior" squirrels munching happily to share with you.

Debi that is one of the most adorable pics ever. He is so darn cute. I just love squirrels. I would go broke feeding them if I had the number you have. Mine are happy to seal the birdseed. He is a pretty color too.

Lynne asked for a pic of how the squirrels have learned to knock at the window. This guy not only knocked, he's trying to open the window!

Next we have this morning's visit by the two I call the twins. They're usually knocking each other off the table, but this morning they called a truce and ate side by side. That's rather unusual for squirrel behavior!

The latest adventure in my wildlife window....Rocky Raccoon vs. Joy the Cat.

2:30 AM I have a cat caterwauling at the pulled blinds of the wildlife center. She was bristled up and arched like a cartoon cat and losing her mind worrying at the window. When I looked through bleary eyes, I could see the shadow of what I know was a revisit of Rocky. Prior to Joy joining the household, Rocky had visited and been run off several times. I could plainly see that he was back so approached the window and pulled up the blind. And there he was...trying to open the dang window, which was not locked!

So! Trying to restrain Joy as she hissed and snarled at Rocky, I managed to lock the window and scare him off. Joy saw him leaving and heading to the back yard so she launched herself to the window behind my bed and snarled at him as he marched himself down the hill towards Hardee's and Hammer's bar....again.

I am now keeping that window locked! All other windows are already, but I open that window a lot to put nuts and corn out for the squirrels. I never leave any food out there at night, but I figure Rocky was just checkin' and when he found nothing again decided perhaps opening the window would give him food. Smart critters they be! Joy has now earned "Guard Cat" status!

This is going to ruin your wildlife viewing. Joy is going to be on that window every time they visit. Maybe you can shut her out when you want to feed so you can still enjoy watching them. These animals are sure smart.

My cat Avalon was that way with the feral cats and raccoons who used to live near my house in Florida. She would go nuts whenever they came up on the porch.

She's fine with the squirrels and birds, Lynne. It's Rocky the Raccoon's midnight visits that she is reacting so strongly to. Rocky casts a really big shadow through the blinds, and she reacts to the size of it. Now that she's seen it and watched from the other window as it goes down the hill she's just all fired about Raccoons!

She'll sit all day and watch the squirrels and birds and enjoy herself. Rocky..not so much!

This is a joint wildlife and Joy story for your entertainment.

Today, a birdie toy arrived for Joy. When you pat the back of the bird, it flaps its wings and chirps for about 10 seconds. It restarts when it's patted again...or as we found out today, thrown across the room into the wall by your cat and your cat impacts it going full out to keep it chirping and flapping for the next half hour.

To say she loves this toy involves the fact shook it, threw it, used her murder mitts on it, sat on it, flung it off the bed, ran it under the bed, ran the house twice with it in her mouth, and then deposited at the window sill to warn the outside birds she was on the job. She's an 8 yr. old rather large girl but that didn't slow her down...until she was done. She has now slept for 4 hours.

This shall be a toy we use "under supervision" so I don't lose a window or have dents in the walls! It was like watching a Predator movie! lol

Is this the one that flys off the ground a little bit? I was thinking of getting one for Toby. I think I need this toy too.

No, this one is ground only BUT you CAN attach it to a wand if you want. Toby would probably love this thing. And it's rechargeable. It also has an OFF switch, which I find handy in the middle of the night.
