Residents of a town in Greece were astounded earlier this week when they discovered that spiders had covered part of their beach with an enormous web. The nightmarish natural netting apparently appeared overnight in the town of Aitoliko and was noticed by unnerved members of the community on Monday morning. Measuring an astounding 1,000 feet long, the massive cobweb created a rather eerie scene at the beach as it enveloped numerous different plants in a veritable cocoon of creepiness.

Experts say that the source of the spookiness were spiders of the Tetragnatha genus which are known for producing such vast webs. A spider specialist consulted by one media outlet assured residents that such an occurrence is "not unprecedented" and that the eight-legged wonders posed no danger to people nor to the plants that were covered by the cobweb. She also explained that the spiders likely built their web on the beach at Aitoliko because the area boasts warm temperatures, high humidity, and an abundance of mosquitoes to provide food.

Sensing these conditions coming together all at once, the spiders apparently decided that the area was the ideal place to briefly 'plant roots' so that they could reproduce. Once the process of creating a new generation is complete, the spiders will either move on or die off and the web will wither away. While this may all make perfect sense on a scientific level, we're guessing it will fall on deaf ears when it comes to arachnophobes in Aitoliko who have long since fled the area in search of an giant can of Raid.
