A curious piece of footage out of China appears to show a rather sizeable creature swimming in a river. The relatively impressive sea monster video was reportedly filmed in the city of Yichang along the Yangtze, which is the longest river in Asia. In the all-too-brief footage, a dark serpentine-like form can be seen almost slithering the water and, at one point, looks to measure around ten feet long.

Garnering millions of views on Chinese social media, the enigmatic footage has inspired a variety of theories as to what the 'monster' may have been, including prosaic possibilities like trash and suggestions that the creature could be a crocodile or a very large snake. Since it's not unheard of for Burmese pythons to roam throughout China, that particular hypothesis certainly has merit.

This recent oddity in the Yangtze River is actually not the first 'monster' we've seen from China as the country has its fair share of faux Nessies that have made the news over the years. Perhaps the most famous may be the Kanas Lake Monster which has been filmed on several occasions.

This is interesting,I read up on the Yangtze alligator and it only gets to be 2m long, that creature looks at least double that,it also looks to have spines on its tail,so a snake maybe ruled out.

It’s big whatever it is. Who knows what has grown in that polluted water.

A sizeable anomaly spotted seemingly swimming in a Chinese river has apparently been revealed to be far less monstrous than it initially appeared. Footage of the oddity lurking in the Yangtze River caused something of a stir when it appeared on social media in China and garnered millions of viewers. Soon, additional videos of the 'monster' from around the same location in the city of Yichang popped up online and served to deepen the mystery.

The primary suggestions for what the anomaly could have been centered around either a large water snake or a piece of debris. Unfortunately for those in the proverbial creature camp, it would appear that the 'monster' may literally be trash. That's because a new video has emerged showing workers in Yichang hauling a long, dark object out of the river. According to one media report, the item was later identified as an "abandoned rubber band dumped into the water."

Considering the size of the massive rubber band, which is apparently used for constructing inflatable boats and had been wrapped in canvas, as well as the location where it was found, it would seem to be a safe bet for the source the 'monster' of the Yangtze River. Of course, that conclusion could come undone should new footage emerge of a similar-looking creature in the Yangtze River now that the debris has been removed.

That river is so polluted it’s no surprise it was garbage.
