This is found in many high schools. Can you identify what it's purpose is ?

Yep, same answer. Our PE teacher called it "climbing the peg board."i know what that is.. we used that on the wrestling team sometimes for upper body strength training...gymnastics team used it too for the same purpose.....(or at least i think i know what it is...lol) ours was twelve feet high and then another that went twelve feet horizontal....
Don't know if ours had a bell, I never made it that high.i still remember ours was right below a banner that read "winners never quit, quitters never win" with a bracket out of the wall with a large bell hanging from it you would ring when you made it to the top.
ours was in what we referred to as "the other gym"...lol... a separate training bldg just for the sports teams. weight room, open floor with wrestling mats, gymnastics equipment and mats, etc....( i think now they even have a full pool bldg for the swim team)... mainly used by the wrestling and gymnastics teams with other teams using the weightroom regularly. the bell was a must-do goal if you wanted to wrestle in the next meet.... unless you were one of those in the 132 pound or lower weight class and were the one in that division. then you got to always compete regardless....lol... good times thoughDon't know if ours had a bell, I never made it that high.
I remember your weight is usually on one peg while you lift and insert the next peg higher with other hand. Rinse and repeat.climbing the peg board.
There was a bell at the top of the climbing rope in the gym. They didn't give us a bell on the pegs lol.large bell hanging from it you would ring when you made it to the top.
