The source of the spirits said to lurk in an infamous haunted house located on a Scottish island may have been found as archaeologists have discovered that the home was likely built atop an ancient graveyard.
The notorious Windhouse on Scotland's Shetland Islands has long been considered one of the country's most haunted locations.
The building, which is now largely ruins, was built in the 18th century and is purportedly home to several different spirits that have been seen by numerous witnesses.
As often is the case with haunted locations, urban legend and local lore suggested that there was a burial site beneath the Windhouse which caused the hauntings to take place.
However in this instance, it would appear that the rumors are true as researchers unearthed a pair of skeletons from the 13th or 14th century buried next to the building.
Their proximity to the home left one local archaeologist certain that the remains are merely the tip of a macabre iceberg.
"The skeletons go right up to the door, and doubtless there were skeletons underneath," Val Turner told the Shetland News.
The recovered bodies will be tested to determine their age and subsequently be re-buried at a different location in keeping with regulations surrounding such grim affairs.
Whether the removal of the remains will impact the ghostly activity reported at the Windhouse remains to be seen, since the other denizens of the dirt beneath the building probably aren't too thrilled with these developments.
