The Spirit stores have opened here as well, and Sam's Club has all their Halloween stuff out. Christmas stuff should start to appear right around Labor Day.

After being good with what I ate yesterday and my blood sugar returning back to my normal, I allowed myself a West Virginia pepperoni roll for breakfast this morning; smothered in pepper sauce of course. The sauce has just enough kick to say "hello" to your taste buds. Yum !
Mrs Duke grew up just across the Ohio River from Parkersburg, WV near Marietta, Ohio. While in nursing school she did a clinical rotation in Charleston, WV. As a result, she has a taste for those two WV delicacies, pepperoni rolls and slaw dogs.

Several years ago a Mom & Pop diner opened locally with a WV theme, and it featured both pepperoni rolls and slaw dogs. We managed to eat there only once before it went belly up. A sad day for Mrs Duke when she found out it had closed.

When I was in Virginia I learned to eat chilie dogs with coleslaw on them. I like it but had not thought about it in years since I don't eat hot dogs anymore. The slaw was a sour (vinegar or lemon juice) version instead of my mother's sweet version. I never liked cole slaw until I had it made that way.

I like my slaw neutral or on the sweet side. I also like slaw on the dry side.

I was surprised to find pulled pork sandwiches in southern Virginia were served with a scoop of coleslaw inside the bun. It was also the first time I ate vinegar based barbecue sauce.

Oh, we had vinegar based Barbeque sauce instead of sweet, but all the cole slaw in restaraunts and family picnics was always sweet. I even watched my aunt put a table spoon of sugar into the mayo when she mixed the coleslaw. Ugh! My sister in law taught me to soak the cabbage in vinegar or lemon juice for a time before draining it and making the slaw. Hers was a good receipe. Onions and carrots mixed in with the cabbage. My mother only put shredded carrots in hers and some of her relatives would add raisins. I never liked cabbage until my Virginia in-laws taught me how to cook it with seasoned meat or a ham hock.

I am not kidding about the owl outside my bedroom window. I don't hear him/her with the windows closed. When I step outside in the evenings, I hear the "hoot" . . . . . "hoot" . . . . of an owl.
I'm jealous.... I've been listening for the owl all summer, and I'm still waiting. For me, it's kind of a cosmic "all-clear" signal. When I hear her hooting, and I usually do hear her even through a closed window, I feel like the universe is saying everything is ok.
