EQ and Compression are best left for post-production.
Someone else early on had trained me on doing it this way so I haven't deviated. But I know there's an easier way that will make it sound more professional.

You got that right Bob. I'm sparing with compression unless really need to balance two or more sound sources

It happens. Mixers can be good. But unless a person knows what they are doing with on-board EQ it's best left to post-pro so you can fix it later.
I'm not sure if you can buy a mixer without EQ on board...but that would be nice.

A good interface is all that's needed for good, clean audio.
