I was in my teens in the 80's, which as not a good time to copy fashion. I ended up in a denim jacket AND trousers with adidas trainers, or for special occasions looking like Don Johnson from Miami Vice.
I decided then and there to avoid current fashion at all costs.
I was more of a quiet nerd anyway. Made and crashed model aeroplanes, made my own skateboard from a pair of steel rollerskates, and gave that up after nearly killing myself.
Wore pin badges made from shrunken crisp packets warmed in the oven.
My brother had a gollywog, and I had a chemistry set.
I bought my kids a modern chemistry set, and over the years they have become safer and safer, to the extent that you now get sand and PVA glue to experiment with, and all the fun has gone. I don't know how you can learn about chemistry using sand glue and coloured ink.
Weird Al has something to say about being white and nerdy.
