Today my kids and I went to the dentist for our normal 6 month checkup. My daughter (7) had sealant put on her teeth for the first time and it was kind of traumatic for her. She was crying hysterically and scared the whole time. I was right there and ended up holding her hand and helped her calm down.

So later at dinner she was telling my husband all about it and mentioned that she saw a little girl poke her head into the room. My son and I looked at each other, confused. She described the little girl and said her name was Abigail and that she had short brown hair. I asked questions like, what was she wearing, and did you see her parents? She didn’t see what she was wearing and did not see her parents. I look up at my husband and mouth - there were NO other kids there today while we were there! I don’t know why this freaked me out so badly but I swear I only saw two other patients there today while we were there and not once did I see any other children. My son also clearly did not see any other kids there today. I want to ask my daughter more but don’t want her to wonder why I am asking. She used to see things a lot as a baby and toddler but hasn’t seen anything (at least that I know of) in several years. Do you think she could have seen a ghost or spirit?

She very well could have,as you probably know kids are more open than most adults to this. The stress may have brought this ability out again or if you look at it from a sceptical view, she may have created an imaginary girl to help her cope at the time.I used to talk about this type of thing to my kids when they were younger and they are pretty well balanced adults now.Kids are more aware and accept things better than we give them credit for,but I understand you not wanting to frighten or worry her.

It's possible she saw something again, but I would first make a phone call to the dentist to be sure staff didn't have a child in a back room or office who may have peeked in.

I think I hit the nail on the head. The young child created an imaginary young girl to cope with the stress.
A hallucination under mental and physical stress rather than a hallucination under a mental illness.
But then again...;)

I would like to know how she knew she was called Abigail. Sightings can be many things, but to gain a name could be an ability to communicate, or an active imagination.
It all hinges on whether Abigail existed or not.

I agree with the opinions above. I think it’s important to not make a big deal of it in front of your daughter. This way if it happens again she will be comfortable about discussing it with you.

I always had a big deal going back and forth about making a big deal out of a tragedy. The best shrinks who were my teachers always said to go not to make a fuss over it. Little people can get over it without being stigmatized. I tend that way.
It is nothing more than a strategy and you don't know how that thing is going to work out.
