I've already posted about this on a couple of different sites but nobody seems to have answers. Before I tell my story I just want to say that I'm still skeptical about the paranormal and I'm not sure if I believe in it. I can't find an answer for this and that's why I'm posting here.

When I was in 7th grade we would have book discussions in my language arts class. We would push most of the tables to the back of the room and all sit at the front. We would set our things at the back tables when we did this. After one of our discussions I went to grab my notebooks and heard something metal fall and hit the table. I looked down and there was an antique brooch. I took it home and still have it. I just don't understand why it was there or why someone would put it there. The only logical explanation I can come up with is that a classmate put it there but it's really weird that they would leave an antique brooch that's in rough condition. It just doesn't make sense. I really just want to hear other people's opinions on it.

Hi Chap, and welcome.

Have you had anyone, like an antique dealer or appraiser, look at the item to find out about its background? Is there any writing on it, anywhere? What is it made of? Can you post a photo with the item facing downward? Also curious where you are, or actually where the school was where you found the item?

Hi Chap. The paranormal answer might be an Apport. Now, as you are a skeptic, this might be hard to fathom, but sometimes things literally will fall out of the sky. Sometimes it's things we have "lost" and suddenly reappear. It's thought that it comes back into our dimension from another.

I have had this happen to me several times in my life, and one episode was recently with some keys. I have the story here on site. Apporting Key thief strikes again

I am retired from the medical field, am not crazy, and yes, this actually happened. My adult son is also a sensitive as am I. We do at times have some activity in our home but not often.

We have another member here who is retired from law enforcement who has this happen on a regular basis.

So, it may have been an apport. Why, we may never know. Duke is asking some good questions, as there may be a history to that brooch that may give you some clues as to the why it popped back in over here.

I live in a place that's kind of remote and there aren't any antique dealers I know of near me. After I found it I tried to find a business that could look at it but couldn't find one. I live in Iowa in a very small town. The school was built in 1917 and a few years after it opened a girl around my age died in a locker room in the basement after cracking her head open and bleeding to death. The school always created this slightly weird offputting feeling but that could be because of the old architecture. I thought maybe the story about the girl could be important since the brooch looks like someone from that time would've worn. There's no writing on it but it has this texture that almost looks like finger prints. Maybe it had been held so much they had been imprinted on it. I rarely ever touch it so I don't think it could be mine.

Chap, I don't think that is a brooch. After seeing the back, it looks like a hardware piece perhaps a drawer pull. I have seen the design before when I was very young. And I am rather old now. Lol.

I agree with Debi, this is a piece of furniture hardware, not a brooch. It looks to be an iron casting. To find out more about the item will take some serious research on your part. I'd start with an antique dealer, there must be an antique shop within reasonably driving distance of you. Another option is to find a collector of such things and send them the two photos you posted here. Here is a site that looks like it might be a good starting point, Antique Drawer Pulls and Handles | Collectors Weekly. These type folks live for mystery pieces to identify.

To attempt to tie the piece to the school, I would try to track down former/retired faculty and staff from the school to see if they recognize it. The local board of education or teachers' union can steer you to a teachers' retiree group, or at least a point of contact for the group. If they could help you find former custodians, that would be a boon since they would have done any cleaning or repairs on such items in the school.

The local historical society might also be a good source. If the town is as small as it sounds, members of the society probably attended the school. If the town/community has a local newspaper, I'd also contact them to see if they would do a story on you and the item. This is exactly the type story small town papers love as they can generate lots of cross talk between the paper and the community.

Friendly advice, when contacting these or other potential sources of information, do not mention any paranormal connections or suspicions relative to it. Just tell them you found it in the school as a youngster and have always been curious as to its history. Once you know particulars about the item, then you can start looking into paranormal connections, if any, as a dual path effort.

Good luck and let us know what you find out.

I had no idea. I always assumed it was a piece of jewelry since it's very small and looked like it had places for stones on it. That's so interesting.

How big is it? Put a coin beside it or a ruler so we have a scale to work with. It looks like brass. Check it with a magnet. Those holes are not sets for gems they are just decorative.

I'll try and find a magnet.

I’m not real up to date on furniture or jewelry but isn’t that a clip on the back like you would clip it to your blouse?

I can’t think of how you would install that on a drawer.
