Con Edison is still baffled over what caused the weekend’s major blackout — and warned on Monday that more outages could be coming with a heat wave on the way.

“We expect that there could be service outages — those things happen during heat waves,” the power company’s chief spokesman, Mike Clendenin, said during a morning appearance on PIX11.

Insisting that the company invests $2 billion every year to prepare for soaring electricity demands when the mercury rises, Clendenin claimed Con Ed will be “prepared.”

“We know it’s going to be intense,” he said of forecasts predicting temperatures reaching 100 degrees this week. “This heat wave coming up is something else and we’ve got to get ready for it.”

But he admitted that engineers still have no idea what caused Saturday’s outage that left 73,000 without power in Manhattan.

Confirming that the blackout was not connected to heat or overusage, he said that “fortunately, there was no major or extensive damage” — conceding that that would have left the power out for even longer.

They were at first so adamant it was a transformer, then they didn't know, now they have no clue at all what caused it. Makes ya go hmmmmm.....

So I guess Air conditioning sales have been up in Manhattan over the last few years?

Just imagine if someone came up with a way to use the sun to generate power. :blacksunrays:

They have already ruled out over usage as the source of the problem as related to heat or air conditioning. Here is an update from one hour ago:

Con Edison blamed their relay protection system Monday for the weekend power outage in New York City, saying the system didn't operate as designed, according to preliminary findings from the company.
"That system detects electrical faults and directs circuit breakers to isolate and de-energize those faults," the company said in a statement. "The relay protection system is designed with redundancies to provide high levels of reliability. In this case, primary and backup relay systems did not isolate a faulted 13,000-volt distribution cable at West 64th Street and West End Avenue."
"Our analysis of data and testing of the relay protection equipment is continuing, and will provide more insight into why the system, and its multiple redundancies, did not operate as designed," the company added.

Now, they simply have no idea why it failed and those relays got flipped. BTW, let's all remember the timing on this. It happened to the day of the last big black out of July 13/14, 1977. Timing...interesting timing.

Power outages are scary things. More reason we need to protect against an EMP occurrence. We need to harden the grid ASAP.
