A parrot triggered an emergency call on November 16th when firefighters rushed to the scene in the hamlet of Daventry, UK, alerted by a monitoring company to the sound of a fire alarm in a private residence.

The company actually called resident Steve Dockerty, 63, to warn him of the alarm sound, but Dockerty told them he was fine, even as the alarm continued to blare in the background. Worried, the company alerted the local fire brigade, who arrived minutes later to the bewildered homeowner’s amusement.

He told them that his 17-year-old African grey parrot Kiki liked to imitate sounds, and that his other African grey, named Jazz, was “laughing his socks off” as Kiki imitated the alarm perfectly. The crew, who probably don’t see much action otherwise, were amused rather than annoyed at the comical situation.

So I guess someone in he past was testing their alarm and the bird picked up on the sound ? Funny story

Love it Congo African Greys can be very mischievous, in the summer my grey called Jasper, used to shout hello through the patio doors into the gardens of opposing properties and neighbours would shout back thinking it was me ! lol

If the sound is interesting to them often after only hearing it once they will mimic it very well indeed, they especially like high pitched or unusual sounds. Mine could do my mobile phone ring tone and found it entertaining to keep doing it over and over lol

My good friend Wayne who is married with kids had a let's just say somewhat disapproving mother in law. He had two parrots and they were great mimics and talkers. The mother in law must have telephoned and afterwards Wayne must have said "What does Mother in War want now ?". Of course upon her next visit the parrot repeated this and then nodded joyfully. knowing what trouble it had landed him in.
