Illinois Police Threaten To Kill Their Police Dogs If Marijuana Is Legalized

Police in Illinois has said that if marijuana becomes legalized in the state, they will have to kill their police dogs. They put this down to the fact that the police dogs have been trained to be anti-social.

Police Dogs cannot be Retrained Says K-9 Trainer
The K-9 Training Academy training director, Chad Larner, said that police departments in states in the US might have to euthanize their drug dogs if marijuana should be made legal. Larner went on to say it would be abusive for them to keep the dogs and retrain them and it might even be an impossible task to do. He also said that the police dogs were trained not be social with people as that is what their job requires.

It seems that it is not only the police in Illinois that feel this way; police in numerous other states are of the same feeling. Steve Petrilli, Assistant Police Chief, said that retraining the dogs would be almost impossible to do. He went on to say that right now the dogs are trained on five different doors, and once they have been trained, they cannot just be deprogrammed. He concluded by saying that the implications were huge.

Police in Washington Have Had Success with Retraining
However, many police departments in Washington have shown that police dogs can be retrained. Dan Linn of NORML, a legalization activist, said that he believes the police are making empty threats just so they can scare the public away from the idea of getting marijuana legalized. He said that the idea that legalizing it for adults to have one ounce of cannabis on them will mean police dogs have to be put down is ridiculous.

Let me just say BS on this! Police dogs have been "retired" to the handlers and their families for years! This is more a subtle threat to sway thoughts on legal weed.

Just because marijuana is legalized doesn’t mean that dogs trained to smell it are useless. Same way that guns are generally legal to own in North America but sniffing dogs are still trained to smell lubricants, powder and other gun related substances. You still need sniffer dogs to find marijuana in potential trafficking cases, or if someone’s way over their possession limit.

It’s an empty threat and the police know damn well that these dogs don’t even need retraining.

They may be antisocial, but they’re incredibly loyal to their handlers. You just cant send them off to a civilian family most of the time.
 
This is ridiculous on so many levels....so you're telling me that sniffing out weed is all these dogs can do, do they not sniff out other drugs or explosives....why even train for pot when in most areas now its not even inforced....in the city I live its just a ticket, doesnt even go on your record...just a minor fine.....so why is tax payers money even being spent on this training if that's the case in most areas now....why use a life for something that's just a misdemeanor at most anymore.......this should bring up many questions that they probably don't want debated and will not help their intentions in the long run......not well thought out in my opinion.

Sometimes I read stuff concerning politics and law and I scratch my head wondering how the heck these ppl got to where theyre at.....and what were they thinking when they wrote / said that....
I'm not a smart guy but sometimes its mind boggling even to me what is said and done by our fearless leaders.....lol

Fearless but they use fear to push laws. Like how the marijuana prohibition started in the first place.

I don’t know about America, but in Canada, K-9 units can’t just just search people. And in public places you need probable cause to search someone. In fact if a sniffer dog found drugs on me and they can’t prove they already had probable cause to search me, the evidence can be thrown out in court. So they’re only good for carrying out search warrants, or if say, a shopping Center asked a K9 police or security unit to walk around the premises anyway.

Oh my God, it's terrible. Why not give them to shelters if they are not needed. Yes, and marijuana, not the only drug that police dogs can sniff out. There are still many illegal drugs that dogs can look for. And plus to that, people find ways to hide the smell of marijuana, just for such cases. And this did not affect the work of the dogs searching for drugs. It took me just a minute to google, to find an article about how to hide the smell of marijuana. How could I be the first who did it. It says that "Marijuana is our saving grace, but we need to find ways to smoke weed without smell. If we smoke weed inside, we could be inviting scrutiny by the authorities into our homes, and forfeiting our right to protection from search and seizures. Hiding the smell of weed is an art weed connoisseurs must execute to remain safe and discreet. To cover weed smell, there are some simple tricks you can use that we will go over." So? Do you think the dogs will be killed? I think no
