David Weatherly: Nightcrawlers in Indiana

Nightcrawlers in Indiana

By far one of the most popular post I've ever made on this blog is the story of the Fresno Nightcrawlers. There's quite a bit of follow up information on the case that I'm still looking into and trying to validate. Unfortunately, such things are often a slow process.

David Weatherly: Where Are The Nightcrawlers?

Still, not a week goes by that I don't receive questions about the case, most of them asking if there's any new information, or if there have been any more sightings of the weird stick like figures. Curiously, there have been a few sightings here and there that bear some common elements with the weird Nightcrawlers. Some of these are older reports of course and the Nightcrawler moniker didn't appear until the Fresno case. Still, the possible connections are interesting to examine.

Researcher Albert S. Rosales recently dug up a report from January 24, 2004.

In the case below, the joints that "buckle out," the strange, stick like appearance, and the odd movements all sound similar to the Fresno entities.

The time was 7:30 in the evening. The location: Manchester, Dearborn County, Indiana:

A 17 year old motorist traveling almost 10 miles north of Aurora Indiana on Saturday night claims to have encountered an unusual figure on the road. While driving his black Chevrolet Cavalier southbound along North Hogan Road, a "figure" was spotted in the headlights of the automobile. The figure was crouched down near a puddle of water. From the driver's perspective, the figure was spotted out of the windshield on the right of the car.

After passing the frail-looking figure, the driver looked into his rear view mirror and again observed--illuminated by the taillights of his car--what he described as a tall, abnormal figure that moved strangely with pointed joints that "buckled out."
He estimated the figure stood around 6 feet, seven inches. "It had protruding joints and moved very strangely."

The driver said he was able to ascertain the figure, alleged to be dark gray or black, and "pencil thin," stand up and take several steps toward the woods along the roadside. The figure definitely walked on two legs and was thought somehow to be a male, although no clothing was noted. No face or eyes could be seen, but the witness had the impression that the figure was looking straight at him.

The figure was immediately thought to be something out of the ordinary, not a human being. The duration of the sighting was "hurried" and possibly within the 3 to 4 second range. The driver continued on for a small distance after passing the figure and finally put on his brakes, coming to a stop at an estimated 2 minute walking distance on the road from the location of the sighting. He looked back to further observe the entity. At that point, a second car came into view and approached from the opposite direction, passed, and then reached the spot on the road where the figure was thought to be. The 17 year old motorist reportedly watched closely and observed the second car undertake what he thought to be an evasive maneuver near the vicinity of where he thought the figure would be situated, and then the car turned around at that spot and shortly pulled up behind him, somewhat in the grass.

There was an elderly couple in the car, both in their late 60s or early 70s and both with gray hair. The driver, who wore glasses, said,

"Boy, did you see something back there? I'll tell you right now, that was no person."

The passenger, an elderly female said,

"It was no human being, it was no man."

The elderly couple was reportedly "spooked" but offered to follow the first witness the remainder of the trip down North Hogan Road, clearly in the opposite direction of their intended destination route. It was thought that the elderly couple observed this same figure on the opposite side of the road, and possibly had observed it more closely. Later, the 17 year old witness was said to have become hysterical and within an hour was describing the figure as an "alien."

In the first season of SYFY's Fact or Faked, the Paranormal Files, the team investigated the case of the Fresno Nightcrawlers. The case was based around a piece of footage captured by a security camera in Fresno, California. The video shows a bizarre pair of creatures moving across the front lawn of a home. Both the creatures and their movements are very strange. These stick like beings move in a fluid fashion and their knees appear to bend backwards. Analysis of the film revealed that the creatures were somewhere between three to three and a half feet tall.
The Fact or Faked team made numerous attempts to reproduce the video and prove it a hoax with no success.

Some time later, a second piece of film turned up, purported to have been filmed on the outskirts of Yosemite National Park.

The footage again shows two of the stick like beings, moving on a hillside. The video of these creatures has fascinated many investigators. At first glance, it looks like a poor hoax because the creatures are so surreal. Closer examination of the footage and details however, shows that there is
quite a puzzle to be found here. As the Fact or Faked team discovered, replicating the beings and their movements is difficult and none of the standard hoax scenarios worked. If someone did indeed create the footage, it seems they went through a great deal of effort to do so.

Adding to the mystery of the case, a puzzling series of photos has surfaced. The pictures show statues, carved in wood, that closely resemble the "Nightcrawlers". As nothing involving this case is simple, the origin of the photo's subjects can not be determined. The pictures surfaced from a source in Florida who claimed they were merely passed on to him by a woman in New Jersey.
A report aired on TV in Mexico displayed the original footage from Fresno, Ca and also showed the series of photographs. The story further states that the creatures are related to Native American legends and have been living in the area since before human beings.

While the photos could have been taken in New Jersey or Florida, all signs seem to point to them having been taken in California. It's further claimed that the series of statues are located near a DMV office. If this is the case, then surely a large number of people have seen these statues.

So, have you seen the Nightcrawler statues?

The statues remind me of Groot from the movie Gardians of the Galaxy.

I remember seeing this footage on fact or faked and was amazed by its strangeness. I think this may be a real phenomenon.
