A dad claims to have snapped the face of a witch who was killed in 1647 for making a pact with the Devil – after her ghost ‘spoke to him through a haunted tree’.

Self-declared sceptic Paul Stevenson, 48, was walking in the woods at Teversal Trails in Nottinghamshire with ghost hunting friends when he claims a tree at a set of crossroads whispered his name.

When pal Lee Roberts returned to the spot the next day to get some pictures in daylight, the duo were left stunned to discover a face peering back at them from the tree’s foliage.

They soon discovered that a mother named Margaret Moore confessed to making a pact with the Devil in 1647 to save the life of her remaining child after her first three children died.

Interrogated at Ely jail, Cambs, she admitted to sending an imp to kill Thomas Nix on the request of the Devil and was sentenced to death – and is believed to have been taken to the crossroads to be hanged.

Paul and Lee believe they may have encountered the ghost of Margaret as they claim something sinister lurked in the bushes and had thrown things at them that night, while they had also heard growls and cackles around them.

Dad-of-two Paul said: “As daft as it seems, I do think the tree spoke to me.

“It felt oppressive and nasty, as if someone was watching us.

“The incident happened at the cross roads, which are notorious in the paranormal world, they are very symbolic. People have been known to be stuck there between worlds. So I don’t think it’s a coincidence that it happened there.

“No word of a lie, I heard the tree whisper my name – ‘Paul’. I said it straight away, ‘that tree just spoke to me’. Jason heard it too and Lee thought he heard something later.

“People who watched our live stream from the evening claimed it was witches. We then found out a witch was hung in the area in 1647, whose surname was Moore. She was a known witch apparently and was hanged nearby.

“We thought we would get a lot of activity from the area as it’s an old mining pit, but we thought it would be from men, not women.

“It felt like people were around us in the wood, throwing things at us, moving and banging things and being mischievous. We heard growls and cackles.

“Then I saw a figure stood in the woods and felt someone run at me. That was me done, I’d seen enough.

“I do class myself as a sceptic. I’m not a die-hard non-believer. I would like to be convinced but my logical brain always kicks in.

“However I can’t explain what happened that night. Yes, it was dark, but I swear on my kid’s life that the tree whispered to me. They all laughed at me but it did.

“People then saw stuff after me. I never even thought of witchcraft in the area until people suggested it, but it does all seem to fit in now.

“The path is lovely and picturesque in the day time but completely different at night. It’s very scary.”

When Lee returned to the crossroads the next day, he took pictures of the tree but it was only upon showing them to Paul later that they spotted the face peering back at them.

Lee, 40, said: “Paul is one that is always very sceptical anyway so to hear him say this was quite funny, but also makes you wonder.

“I definitely think there was something in it as it was strange how we even ended up at the tree. We had supposed to go a different way but got lost and ended up at those crossroads. So it all just happened by chance. It was a strange place.

“I really believe that energies can get attached to an object as they are supposed to leave the living world. This could have happened here – the witch could have become attached to this tree and then tried to speak out to us, as daft as that sounds.

“Everything felt like witches. I have never encountered anything with witches before so it was very odd. But we had no clue at the time, it was only upon researching it that we found this out.”

Paul, who is editor of Haunted Magazine, said: “Lee went back the next day and caught the picture of the face in the tree. It looks quite spooky. It’s very weird.

“People will call it pareidolia and so on but to me it looks like someone in the tree, even as a sceptic.

“That tree freaked us all out. ”

the picture isn't all that spooky or convincing to me.. what is, however, is the guy hearing cackling, growling, possible banging of things, stuff hurled at them etc. anyways I too believe energies, especially be it demonic, can attach themselves to inanimate objects/possessions etc. I've read plenty of personal testimonies in the past before. who knows just how true, as yes maybe one's mind does play tricks on ya when you're in heightened state of fear.. but when something outright grabs or boldly talks to you, laughs, tosses things etc that's lot more conclusive or irrefutable.
