It's the time of year when we celebrate the creepy, the crawly and the downright scary. Ghosts, goblins and skeletons show up at our door and we reward them with candy and treats. Or perhaps with only a rock.

One of the ways we have embraced the season is with movies. Some are "just" horror movies, but there are those which are set on or around Halloween itself, such as the first Halloween from 1978 or Silver Bullet from 1985.

So which movies will you attempt to scare yourself with as we prepare for the invasion of little ghouls and zombies? Do any of them actually frighten you?

Here are the ones that I always try to see during this time of year:

  • Night of the Living Dead
  • Pet Cemetery
  • Pumpkinhead
  • An American Werewolf in London
  • Halloween
  • The Howling

The oldtime Universal horror movies are classics and head the list. Bela, Karloff, Chaney.
Peter Lorre and Vincent Price made some cheap ones I still watch; I already confessed to 'The Hoouse of Wax'.
The Hammer horror series with Christopher Lee and the Julie Harris-Claire Bloom version of Shirley Jackson's 'The Haunting'.
'The Exorcist' and 'Rosemary's Baby' stay with me.
'Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde' I love because Stevenson wrote it so quickly and it was just a potboiler so awful his wife burned the first draft.
