Not Sure What This Is

I have not experienced this. The introduction of a fan i have heard 'phantom' music mixed within the hum. Curious it does not happen during day. I wonder if covering eyes during day would make a change at all?
I may try that. I am very curious about this happening.

I used to hear what sounded like people talking to each other on a radio when younger, their conversations were random and didn't make sense like they were talking over each other. My mum who is very skeptical used to get this when very stressed, I don't know if that's what causes this.
Does anyone have any ideas or thoughts as to what might be going on?

I always hear "music" when multiple fans are running, or machinery moving in circular motions quickly. Stop the fans, the music stops. I'm sure it's a pareidolia effect. The brain is hearing the various harmonics and overtones of the fans and is trying to make sense out of it.

Oz and Utah, these are likely explanations. But I am still puzzled about hearing them with ear plugs on.;ss

Dental work radio receiver? There are documented cases.

Lol, what if somebody had this, and the only station they picked up was a 24 hour all-Rammstein station or Howard Stern or something equally objectionable, lol.

I could write horror movies.

I had all dental amalgams removed, so it can't be a problem with that. Last night I swear I heard some guy singing opera. It was quite audible! I guess it is just going to remain one of those things that don't make sense.

And yes it would be horrible to have to hear those objectionable choices! Ugh!

If I may add the two cents accredited one of our more recently departed hero scientists, Prof. Persinger.
He was doing tests where two special helmets produced matching frequency "patterns" and one of the many things they found was a synchronized sharing of data between brains from a distance. Very quantum in that the results showed there was no conduit, no here or there, and many other very cool things. Add that we know how the brain reacts when you "deprive" it of sensation, thus the earplugs blocking sound. Think of the "Sensory Deprivation" tank therapy.
So, IF it was happening for similar reasons, then you are encouraging the mind to find stimuli by blocking it with ear plugs, and then synchronizing at the right frequency pattern with anything external and processing that data through your sensory system as sound. From my own experiences, I have found that the data is sometimes "off" in time, or wobbles through time. So you get this peaks and valleys of voices or music, or twirling repeats like pool eddys. I have found that time differences challenge the frontal lobes and the ego, so be careful trying to think about that for too long.
BTW I call this "listening". For me it is similar to listening for a faint noise among many other noises. Voices begin to sound like they are coming through a metal tube. Time echoes make things overlap.
So, if you have similar experiences, science is getting closer to seeing it, and trying to describe it, how it is possible, etc.

That is an intriguing take on it! As an autistic, I struggle with hypersensitivity to sounds. I used to welcome ear plugs as a way to "disconnect" but now they are acting as conduits. Sigh.

Excellent explanation, I think I get the idea.
