Retirement?

Due to a sudden disability, I've been "retired" for quite some time. What I've found is that there is a gift of time...what you choose to do with it makes all the difference. Let your soul sing.
life is too short to not experience as much as possible. i try to find a balance in work and living. we are not guaranteed another tomorrow, live while you can

I have been retired about 5 years now and I love it. Money is not what i was used to but I find I need less. Life is still busy and people seek you out because they know you are available.

You are probably the busiest woman I know! lol

My wife and I are both late-life divorcees, we came out of our prior relationships pretty much broke. But we had a path and enough time to still save for a decent retirement. It required both of us working.
Then she started getting sick just a couple of years into our marriage, by the time we'd been married 5 years she could no longer work, was having nausea that lasted up to 12 hours a day (still has this though not as severe). 4 years ago she suffered a concussion in an auto accident, then in October she had a stroke. So our plans didn't happen and I've been doing everything I can for the past half decade just keeping us afloat, hemorrhaging up to $1500/mo. for years. I had to spend all the retirement money keeping her alive since insurance covered nowhere near enough. After almost 2 years, her Social Security disability case was finally granted (COVID doubled the standard review times) last month so we should see some relief in coming months. She should get Medicare as well, which will help tremendously.
But the retirement money is already gone and I'm still 2 years from qualifying for Medicare, myself, so continue to go to the day job every day, for as long as they'll let me keep showing up.

We've been lucky, I've managed to keep paying the bills, but many seniors go bankrupt from medical expenses.
I've heard the health system over there isn't up to scratch, we have it slightly better in that way here but as we get past our use by date we are pushed aside for the young workforce. I can understand the reasoning but it sucks big time that we aren't rewarded for supporting the nation and then forgotten when we need help.

Ageism. We used to value the elderly. Now I can tell you we are treated differently, especially by young docs who look like they are 12. Just had a bit of a rant about that the other day.

I think it's respect that has been lost, doesn't mean anything on paper but I feel it's crucial for us as a species. Older people have so much more to offer apart from the scatterbrained energy of the young, lol.

That is a huge part of it, Oz. There's an attitude out there that is showing up more and more...that the "old" are in the way and gee, why don't you just die and get out of the ecosystem. (Sorry for my bluntness, but I got that exact line from someone not long ago.) Very disturbing.
