With September fast approaching, what early memories do you have of this time of year? Shopping for school clothes? The new TV season starting in a few weeks? Seeing all the friends you didn't see all summer? Beginning of the stretch run for the pennants in MLB? Hoping the weather would cool down to the point you could sleep in your no air conditioning home?

What are your September memories? I'm especially interested in hearing the input of our international members whose memories may be very different from those of us in the US.

Well, my school years memories include: Excitement over my new school outfits from Sears, Roebuck, the smell of new shoes, crisp, new sheets of notebook paper and binders, new pencils, pens, and begging for a new lunch box with a thermos. The other was the extra thick TV Guide that showed all the new fall programming. Looking forward to chilly autumn days, and all the leaf piles we would wade through and play with.

I did NOT look forward to waking up early for school, after staying up to all hours during the summer, lol.

I associate it with a feeling of dread followed by misery going back to my childhood, when the six week break would end and I'd have to go back to school. It's not that I hated school; I just liked it better when I wasn't in it. After all, I saw most of my favourite friends over the summer and we got to spend far more time together enjoying ourselves. It was a time of upheaval, when I was uprooted into a new class with different people. Some of my friends would end up in a different class and I'd have to deal with new kids and starting over with them and a new teacher. That it should coincide with the loss of sunshine and the shortening of days, was too cruel. As an adult I don't have that, but the death of summer still gets me.

As a parent, September is always about the 'school thing', as it was for me when I was younger.

Searching in vain for school uniforms, and other requirements, that vanish from the shops the moment that they appear stocked during the weeks leading up to the big day when they return. I swear there is someone out there that just goes around buying up school uniforms for the sake of it............... :tearsofjoy:

As I often had tough summer breaks as a child, having to spend more time than I would have liked with my stepmother (and other members of our dysfunctional family), I always looked forward to the day I returned to school and re-introduced that 'space' between us. I enjoyed school thoroughly (although not all the subjects we studied. I HATED geography, which is totally ironic considering how much time I have spent studying certain areas of this subject since becoming a paranormal investigator!).

I have 5 years left of this, then everything will change as our youngest will be out of compulsory full-time education.

I will be like a lost puppy in September following this, not knowing what to do with myself.

Guess I will invest in a caravan with all the money I will then be able to save................ :)

I'm with Garnet, Sears clothes and the fall preview issue of TV Guide were annual staples. It was also the run up to the start of the football season.

You brought back some memories that i had not thought of in awhile. I loved getting school supplies. I loved the smell of a new box of crayons. One of my earliest memories is a big fat green pencil that I used in first grade and a gray rug that i used in kindergarten for quiet / nap time. Yep fall reminds me of school.

As a youth, I had always looked forward to the later months of the years because the Holidays were rapidly approaching. They're still fun to me even now but as an adult, I look forward to it because Fall is approaching and so is the cooler weather and so are the changes in foliage.
