Flight/Planes

Well it doesn’t look like George Jetson’s flying car but it sure is cool!

Whatever the issue, it killed one engine and was in the process of killing the second. Might be seabirds of some type ingested into the engines, not uncommon that close to water. Bad fuel is also a possibility, but no reports of other a/c having similar problems. Ditching in the sea with both engines running in the dark is difficult enough, doing it on one malfunctioning engine is even worse.

I just saw the report on TV with more details. These pilots must have had an angel flying with them.

"Modern" is the key word here as I know this was done as late as the 1950s. I was also told the dimensions of the highways and signage as defined in the US Federal Highway Act of the mid 50s were such that KC-135 tankers could land with safe clearance on them after giving away nearly all their fuel to SAC bombers in the event of all out war.

The Swedes, Swiss, and others have used the idea of highway air strips for many years. I remember reading nations adopted this idea to disperse aircraft after the Israelis destroyed most of the Arab air forces on the ground at their bases in the Six Day War in 1967.
