Flu is a bad analogy as it's so much worse. Society puts up with flu as it rarely kills or cripples anyone of working age (which I have gotten to think is pretty cold) and because it is so old and diverse that there's no way to truly beat it, but Covid kills and more often wrecks people of all ages alarmingly often. Measles is a better comparison. A disease that used to run wild but only has odd outbreaks now with local warnings. The flu analogy leads people in the direction of thinking it can run riot so long as we vaccinate the most vulnerable, but that's not an option! WE barely understand the hidden damage it causes, which include heart damage, brain damage, male sterility, blood clots, and many others; it attacks everything and there has been no time to give us all full medicals. It honestly scares me to think what it may have done to me! We have really good vaccines which are far more effective than flu vaccines and people are used to going all out against it, so getting it down to 'rare' is the minimum viable way out.
