TV is awash in "reality" paranormal series....ghosts, cryptids, UFOs/aliens, etc.

What was the first such series you remember watching? What were your initial thoughts on the show?

Do you watch any of them now?

The first show I remember watching was 'Fact or Faked: Paranormal Files' which first aired in 2010 and only ran for two seasons.

The show covered a wide range of paranormal subjects, not just focusing on one, and the team would head out to disprove reported incidents as opposed to actually looking for events. Lead by ex-FBI agent Ben Hansen, the team used a variety of equipment and methods to try and recreate claims sent in by the public and organisations.

They successfully disproved, or provided a viable explanation for, a lot of the cases they looked at. However, there were a number of cases that they just could not provide an explanation for.

From its unique perspective on paranormal research, I found the show interesting. It's a shame it only ran for two seasons, but I suspect that after they had disproved a lot of the sites that relied on the stories of their property for tourism, they got shut down :tearsofjoy:

Though that was a semi-scripted show, I liked the format. I liked that they showed the audience some ways to think more critically in that many fantastical things can be faked or mimicked in mundane ways.

“In Search of” was the tv show i first remember showcasing paranormal stuff. There was The twilight Zone”, but those were made up stories.
Me too Lynne - it was surely “In Search of”. I felt safe with Nimoy’s voice and his delivery. I knew I wasn’t going to experience any planned jump scares. That made it possible for me to really focus on the content so that I could learn.

This was a good show. Idk why they didn’t get picked up for more.

I saw two shows about the same time, early in the 2000s, but I can't remember which I saw first. "Most Haunted" was a show I saw while in the UK, it followed a team of investigators who'd go to various haunted sites in the UK. I thought it was pretty hokie, especially the team's "medium" who was way over the top. Unlike similar investigation shows that were to follow, Most Haunted was fronted by a team member who was an established, professional TV host and former teen actress.

A program called "Scariest Places on Earth" was being shown on one of the cable channels in the US. This series had a unique format in that each episode featured a different family at different locations around the world as the investigators. Each family member wore a video camera mounted on a cumbersome harness deal so their hands were kept free. This remains my favorite of the ghost hunting shows due to its format and the actions/reactions of some of the totally inexperienced investigators. I suspect some of creepier things experienced were created by the production staff to elicit the scared sh**less reactions we saw. At least some of the episodes were introduced by Linda Blair.

Most Haunted from the UK. still my favorite besides Ghost Adventures. Paranormal Caught on Camera is awesome too!
