Not to trivialise anything the OP has said but from a logical perspective you have to take into consideration that sound travels further at night and a loud growl Miles away can seem as though it’s on top of you.
I speak from experience when spending time in Africa. At night lions tend to make a fair bit of noise and there were times the growls/roars sounded as though they were meters away. The reality was they were miles away and the sound just travelled.
Could be possible a bear growl could travel that far?
