I would like to hear from y’all your answer to a simple question. What if anything comes after death? Not the religious belief but what YOU think. Is there a heaven and a hell. If so what will it be like? Are you dead and gone or will you return somehow either as a spirit or reborn and reincarnated? Who or what decides all of this and will you still be YOU even after you die. There are a lot of pretty miserable people out there. Will they find peace?

I’m not looking for a debate. I am really curious about what people in a group like this have thought about this kind of stuff. We probably look at things like this a lot more and differently than most people. I know that over the years I have thought about this a lot and as I aged I saw/see a lot of things differently.

PS: I am working on one of my, as usual, long-winded dissertations about my thoughts on this and will post it in a day or two.

I think finding an answer without it being religious at least in some part will be hard. if you take religion out of the picture then there would not be a heaven or hell, even in the beliefs of reincarnation there is usually a heaven, nirvana, etc... that is the ultimate goal of reaching through repetitive learning in life. without religion in some part we would be just energy in which case we would just possibly follow a straight line for eternity....kinda like a light wave of sorts....until we hit something and dispersed in all directions. perhaps becoming one with the universe. in which case then no, we would not still be self aware. I think though that we all have some religious beliefs that are so solidly formed in us from whatever customs we come from that it is hard to picture what the truth could or might be.

Not a simple question at all...it is the question that drives all humans to learn, explore and discover. It is the answer that everyone seeks.

My own beliefs have changed over the years as I've done that learning, exploring and discovering. Funny thing is, the more I've learned, the more I've revisited to the beginning.

In answer to the question itself, is there life after death, yes, I now believe it to be so. What form does that take is the question that can only be taken on one's own faith. In mine, I believe that the many religious texts are meant to teach us what we cannot fully comprehend....yet. It's bigger than the simple words. We are just beginning to understand the quantum level of things, and believe that's all there in the texts as well.

My current belief is that as part of a greater consciousness which is the Universal Divine, we are intact in what we call our "soul". The soul is, in simple terms, the packet of who we are in conscious form out there in the universe as part of that Whole. We simply live in the bodies here like a radio receiving the transmission of conscious waves. When the soul leaves this body due to death of the receiver, we then cross back to that state of being in the dimension some may call Heaven, as who we are. I believe my core self will remain "me", but not necessarily just as the named person "Debi." I may be "more" than just this lifetime.

Hell? We put ourselves there with our own actions. It's not a place as much as it is a state of being, no matter what dimension we're in.

I could go on, but then I'd being doing a "Tex Dan" post! ;) :D

I tend to follow that train of thought too, Debi. I don't believe in heaven or hell, but do believe that at any given moment we can perceive ourselves to be in one or the other. I have lived in places that convinced me I had descended into the lowest level of hell, and have experienced moments that felt like heaven; a moment in nature, holding my newborn daughter, etc. I don't think that there is a simple answer.

I do believe in other dimensions and/or state of being. We can call it Heaven, for sure. I'm just trying to not go into the religious angle too far as TexDan requested.

I am sure there is something of us that goes on. I do not believe in hell , I think we are there now probably. If it exists. I believe the other side is just like this, but better. One thing that I find hard to figure out is why some spirits want to hang around here after they have passed. Dont they have anyone they loved or loved them that they want to see? I believe in reincarnation because I have looked at my past lives. We come here to learn and experience, Thats it. All people are human .The other side is one of many worlds we can go to. Do good and dont be cruel and you will find life easier now and after you croke. Be cruel, harm animals and innocents and you will get that back too. Maybe it takes lifetimes but I think our souls are immortal and Creator is completely Good. All is well and all is well and all manner of things are well.

perhaps afterwards, on the spiritual plane, we don't remember who we were here. there is some hints of that in some beliefs, but trying to not bring those up....the whole life after death thing has been so infused with religious teachings its hard to separate though. but like reincarnation, where we don't remember past lives, maybe its the same after this one is over, even on that plane.
