The stunningly wrong statistic was used as a straw man argument by The Washington Post, misquoting those who they wanted to attack for political reasons. W/P just didn't include that caveat when they went to press and all the other papers will pick it up as gospel.

This stopped being about Covid-19 a long time ago.
Real disease. Real dead, Realpolitik, as our Russian friends say.
As my personal opinion, the politicized collection of data will take years to figure what really happened.
We got played.
That's why I try to just give facts as I know them to keep people as safe as possible without politics, but dang if they don't keep trying to muddy up the water out there.

Wear the mask, social distance, wash your hands. Local man, 59, played Santa to all our local charity events around here for years...dead this week from it. It's real.

COVID-19 death tied to Sturgis Rally reported in Minnesota' here:

Idiots
the rally should have been cancelled, but honestly, how far do you go, it is an event a lot of ppl depend on and without support of some type its their livelihood. the bars and entertainment for this rally is all a lot of ppl do the whole year, it is huge. they make more in those 2 weeks than a lot of people make all year long. and their employees count on this to survive. (not a lot to do there the rest of the year....lol) its the same as any tourist area, the beach areas count on the summer tourists to survive the rest of the year. but to close all tourist areas down is death to the economy and to those areas and businesses, which in a lot of places are still "mom and pop" type stores or services, not big corporate entities.. I dunno. I saw where it originated from a tattoo studio where one of the artists was infected, I agree he should have been made to stay home, should have taken that upon himself, but at the same time without unemployment or help and faced with making more money in 2 weeks than hes gonna make all year, its only human nature to take care of yourself and family first..... the " you gotta do what you gotta do" method of thinking..... im by no means justifying it, just kinda playing devils advocate, sorta...something has to be done if this is going to be controlled on any level, all the govt, infighting is not going to get any better as long as its able to be used for political gain on both sides.

Debi and I have had similar discussions. I related to her my experiences of heading up crisis management teams, about how at the end of the day you have to make the best bad decision based on the best information you have available. Where things get iffy is defining/weighting critical factors in the process. I think in the case of Sturges, it fairly easy to surmise how those factors were racked and stacked. I think they were wrong, but I don't a financial interest in the local economy.

yep, the best bad decision is the best that can be done in some situations, in most cases we have situations to relate too and have learned from, not so much in this case, we thought we had a plan and an idea of how to handle something like this but it was allowed to go too far before anyone wanted to say the "pandemic" word....plan A, B, AND C I think got away from the world before we knew it, and you always have to plan for murphy showing up, in our case murphy happens to be an election year....we found out quickly that closing down all restaurants leads to a food shortage in the grocery stores. ( 2/3 rds of all food processed is restaurant sized, 5 pound cans of beans, corn, etc....) the suppliers didn't have stocks for groceries that ppl would need in individual family servings...the farmers in the long run is feeling the results of this.... the health industry itself wasn't actually as prepared as they thought they were... etc... so much in the planning to consider and take into the think tanks of trying to find answers.....

Unfortunately this is probably true.

I granted the Scarf Lady and Foachi a lot of leeway at the beginning of the crisis.
Their task was to measure a BB in a boxcar. Tough job, and we flattened the curve. Yippee!

And then they moved the goalposts. Over and over.

Like the little boy that cried wolf, nobody listens to these petty tyrant governors anymore. Add in mayoral sponsored riots and looting, an election year, mail in voting....record #s of new gun ownership.
Welp, you can see how that recipe can go bad.

I used to be the range officer at my country clubs skeet range. There is nothing more frightening than first time gun owners. Especially when you are in charge of everybody else's safety.
Ooooh, I gots storeez.
