The New Shortage Is....

It could also be related to the problems we're having with China. China is the leading supplier of cheap aluminum. They've also driven most refineries in the States out of business. Once we cut off our reliance on China, and other foreign goods, the sooner we will be able to rebuild our nation.

They need to put a deposit on aluminum cans like the used to have on the heavy glass bottles. I remember when hunting bottles was a source of money for kids. We would hunt up a bunch of bottles and then cash them in and go to the movies. We usually found enough for bus fare, and also each have a soda and some popcorn. During the summer that was something we did a lot of.

The deposit and return system was a good one. I remember here Grolsch and Newcastle Brown kept that up into the 90s.

I miss the old heavy glass coke (soda) bottles. they kept the drink cold longer and tasted better. They were made for the place that bottled them first and the bottom of the bottles had that city and state written on it. We are wasting our resources using aluminum once and then throwing many of them away. The same is true of all the plastic bottles. the plastic is filling our garbage and it never rots away when t is tossed out on the roads.

I'm not a big-time eco-nut but we really do need to stop being so wasteful. Plastic was a great thing but we have gone overboard with it. I was raised in a place that in the 60s was one of the most polluted places in America. The Air, water, and soil were all polluted and were deadly. Surrounded by refineries that poured their waste out in the air. Paper mills poured their waste chemicals into the rivers and creeks making the water a brown sludge and the fish were uneatable. the refineries buried their waste in the swamps and then put dirt on top of it. It was a mess. The cancer rate there was massive. Both of my parents had lung cancer and died with cancer.

We are doing better now and they cleaned up most of the stuff that they were doing but the trash thing is a growing problem. EVERYTHING is throw-away now. It doesn't have to be that way. I like cloth grocery bags that you can reuse over and over. Plastic can either be replaced or make biodegradable. Better yet make most things reusable and put a deposit on it.

Bob I saw two things this week that you may find interesting. When I go to the areas that has a lot of metal fabricating, I pay attention to what is sitting in the yards.
The good thing is the natural gas pipelines are stacked and ready to ship. People are going to be very busy for a long long time.
The downside is the rental yards. There are way too many boom lifts sitting there. You need to erect lots of steel to build a big building. And it is not happening.
The upside was a quick trip to Chicago. Money is really cheap right now and the skyscrapers are going up.
So I guess in the span of 30 miles you have depression and an economic boom.

I agree! When life throws a curve ball like this, life is asking us to think outside the box, and do something differently than before.
