National Junk Food Day

Dip size fritos and green chili dip!!!

Homemade caramel popcorn corn and peanuts. It can be loose like cracker jacks or made into balls.

Homemade Trash. That is peanuts, checks cereal, Crispix cereal, mixed nuts, pretzels, cheez-its, little tiny crunchy breadsticks and whatever else strikes your fancy baked with a spicy sauce made from butter, Worcestershire, garlic powder, and other assorted seasonings and spices. We make this and give it away every Christmas.

I love all manner of chips and dips and veggies and dips. I'm not sure that is junk food though.

PEANUT PATTIES!!!!! And peanut brittle.

Tzatziki is...

INGREDIENTS

2 cups grated cucumber (from about 1 medium 10-ounce cucumber, no need to peel or seed the cucumber first, grate on the large holes of your box grater)
  • 1 ½ cups plain Greek yogurt
  • 2 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil
  • 2 tablespoons chopped fresh mint and/or dill
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 1 medium clove garlic, pressed or minced
  • ½ teaspoon fine sea salt.

Is this what they put on gyros?

I really dislike cucumbers, like in a salad or on sandwiches, but do like this sauce. I never knew what is was called until now. Thanks.
Good luck spelling it!

In the grocery stores here in Florida, you can get some decent “dip” in the same area where you find hummus. Great with pita.

If you like mashed potatoes Duke and get the chance, try skordalia. It is a Greek appetizer with garlic and olive oil. I like it but it can be an acquired texture.

I just looked up skordalia. I don't think I've tried it, but I did have something that sounds similar in an Ethiopian restaurant once. I don't remember what it was called, but you ate it by dipping a spongy, sourdough bread into it. It was a unique flavor combination.

one thing ive grown fond of over the last few years, though maybe not "junk food" in the sense of junk, but snack food or fair food ,(which fair season is just a couple months away.....yay.).. is boiled peanuts...almost a required staple down here. raised to the level of a delicacy I do believe, I used to hate these things but somehow my taste has changed, or I was finally brainwashed enough to fall in line with the status quo of the southern lifestyle and flavors.....either way, and for what ever reasoning, I now enjoy and do indeed like the different flavors of a cup of good boiled peanuts..
actually I think what got me over the whole aversion to them was the realization that peanuts are amazingly not even nuts... they are legumes which pretty much means they are just beans. really no different than green beans....only much more tasty.....lol

Peanuts are good almost any way they come to me. I like them raw, roasted, or boiled. They are legumes but unlike beans and peas, they are on the roots of the plant rather than on the above-ground bush.
