The sound of...

Lordy, I hadn't thought about that ice cream truck in forever!! I remember when we would hear it as kids we would all run home and try to get money from our Mamas. That was a big thing in the 50s and 60s.

The world was so different back then. There were all sorts of people that came on a regular basis to the neighborhood. Along with a milkman that just came in the back door and put the milk in the fridge we had a man that came by twice a month and sharpened knives and scissors, a seafood truck, Schwan that delivered frozen foods, AND then a plethora of door to door salesmen selling everything in the world. The newspapers were delivered twice a day by young boys on bicycles.
Yes, wasn't it different? We had milk delivered in glass bottles, and fresh bread, too. Sometimes the whole family would walk to a Dairy Queen for cones. And traveling amusement parks would bring rides to the neighborhood; the Whip, and also pony rides.

I know you said no music, but this was more of a calling card than music.

There is an ice cream truck that comes by our house every few weeks Duke - they were here last week. Unfortunately they use this creepy music which makes we want to run and hide in the freezer instead of run to their truck.

Makes me remember when the Avon lady would come to the house and leave those little samples. I’d always ask mom to use the tiny lipsticks.

The song played by the truck in the video I posted was "Turkey in the Straw." I've heard it played by many different ice cream trucks in various places across the country, apparently it's been an ice cream truck standard for years here in the US.

Back in the 90s I spent a good amount of time in the UK, both in suburban London and further afield, staying in small hotels and B&Bs when possible. I was surprised to find there are ice cream trucks in the UK, but their standard ice cream truck song was "Greensleeves."

Oh, that is an amazing memory! I had forgotten about those tiny lipsticks. As a little girl I thought they were so cute and made just for me.

Pop had a cowbell hanging from the doorknob on the front door. Back then unless you were a bank or a jewelry store you did not have an alarm system.
Bronze cowbell.
Debi's hometown is surrounded by train tracks. If the stars are aligned against you, it would take a half hour to drive across a small town's downtown.
Playing golf as a teenager in the early morning as the sun is barely up has a special set of sounds. On the First Tee you can hear the rumble of the mowers four holes ahead. Birds. Geese. Crows from a nearby farm. And everything is muted by the morning dew. And then you hear the crack of your persimmon driver hitting a golf ball stuffed with rubber bands.
And then the sound of your friend saying" I think you're in the creek on the left."

I think that is an odd choice of music for an ice cream truck. I wonder why they chose that.

I was an Avon lady for awhile to earn some extra money. And those samples were costly little things but necessary to entice the customer to buy.

I loved that description of early morning on the golf course. :)

Metal woods still sound obnoxious to me, and I'm just barely old enough to know the difference, having played wooden woods with the older generation of soft balata covered wound balls. The crack sounds like the first note of lightning in a thundstorm. And it fits right in when you are out in nature.:)
Metal woods and modern balls go 'ting' and reverberate. Club manufacturers spend a lot of money on R&D to get a more pleasant sound. Still, get on a crowded course and it sounds like a metal shop.:(
I get that how you perceive sounds is psychological but it is important on so many levels - like the point of this Owl's Nest thread question.:)
Next time my brother and I go to the range I'm going to bring some wood woods. He didn't play back then and completely missed a fun era.:D
