My mom, as we've talked about before, was her own force of nature. She taught me the value of "stuff". And in doing so, as a rebel teen, why stuff is not to be highly valued! During her hospice time, we had some pretty deep discussions and one was why she was so focused on clothes and having a lot of them. When she was growing up, she had two outfits for high school. Two skirts, two blouses. She came from an extremely poor family. So, she made a vow that someday when she could afford clothes, she would buy as many clothes as she wished...which she did. She had 5 closets of them. Some still had the tags on them when she passed. I didn't know that back story of high school growing up and thus, as most teens do, rebelled against owning so much stuff and kept my clothing down to only outfits I was especially fond of. To this day I maintain that approach to all "stuff."
With the exception of kitchen appliances, of which I own many. (Mom couldn't cook.)
Sometimes what we learn is the exact opposite of what is taught!
