This happened in the late 80's. I had gone to visit my father for the Christmas holidays, and during my visit, he gave up his bedroom for me so that I could have privacy. He had this radio in his room that I liked to listen to before going to sleep, so when I was ready to return home, he asked if I wanted to take the radio with me, since he had others. This was a regular, unremarkable boom box type of radio. So I brought the radio home with me.

One night I decided to turn it on as I prepared supper but couldn't find any music. I turned the dial, growing frustrated because I wasn't picking anything up. Finally I heard something and I raised the volume. What I was hearing sounded like a man's voice talking in an echoing room, and it sounded like he was chanting. I could also hear the voices of a lot of people, and it sounded like they were moaning or lamenting. I couldn't make out words, but it creeped me out, so I rapidly turned the tuner dial to find something else. But all that I could pick up was what sounded like some kind of ritual being done. All I could pick up was the guy chanting, and the people in the background making these lamenting sounds.

I turned the tuning dial until I reached the end of the range, and could not pick up anything else. So I turned off the radio and put it away in a closet. One of my more creepier experiences.

Odd story. Do you remember on which band you were picking up the chanting and lamentations? AM? FM? Did the radio have a shortwave (SW) band? You said you were preparing supper, so this would have been around 5-6pm? And this would have been late Dec/early Jan?

Radio can be creepy.

I used to like dialing through all the frequency bands back in those days. It was fun to listen to the Soviet radio shows on SW. That was when propaganda actually sounded like propaganda. I also remember hearing other strange things like repetitive code transmissions and voices seemingly coming from nowhere.

Sometimes CB (citizens band) would bleed through the AM (or was it SW) range. I'd hear what sounded like people having serious conversations. Though because of the static and reception quality, I was never able to actually follow what was being said.

That is creepy, like they wanted you to listen to this ritual. Also noticed the time you posted this, 11.11,I notice this time frequently, like something tells me to look at the time when I hardly ever do.I don't know if this time has any significance to anything.

Yes, it was late December, and I think the band was AM but can't really remember. Back then I used to listen to both FM and AM; ( AM for an oldies station that I liked.) I'm pretty sure it didn't have a shortwave band, it was just an AM/FM radio with a place for a cassette to be played. the time would have been between 7 and 8 pm.

I've been seeing 10:11, 11:11, 10:01, as well as 2:22 and 3:33. Now, I find that creepy too, because of the frequency of seeing it.

The lates 80s/early 90s saw the release of a series of "chant" CDs featuring monks from various Benedictine, Gregorian and other religious orders. They were very much the "in" thing at the time. I've added a link for a couple of them below.

My first thought was you tuned into a station playing one of those CD, especially if it's possible you could have been listening to a SW band. You can tune across an entire SW band and pickup just one station, depending on time of year/day. Some stations will even broadcast in multiple frequencies on the same band.

They didn't sound Gregorian, and I love listening to Gregorian chanting. This was downright eerie, and I was picking up mental images of a cave like place. I feel comforted, when I listen to Gregorian chanting, and this made me very uneasy, as if I were being forced to participate in something evil.

Would be interesting to know if any Satanic groups released chant CDs around that time in response to the religious order CDs? If so, I could easily imagine some SW station broadcasting them. As UT pointed out above, there were/are some really weird things on SW.

Btw, I just checked YouTube, and there are Satanic chants. I didn't listen to any, but they're there.
