"Have any of your senior (or now deceased) family members every told you of a paranormal or otherwise strange experience?"

(Thanks to Duke for the question.)

A few weeks before my Dad died (Christmas Day 2017), just the two of us were talking about him growing up on a farm in the hills of Kentucky during the Depression. He told me about seeing the well documented, phenomenal Northern Lights event of early 1938. (Termed the "Fatima Storm" by some, but that's another topic.) Not surprisingly, the largely uneducated locals assumed it was the end of the world and many went to the town's only church to meet their Maker.

The next day, my dad (who would have been ten at the time) asked his dad if he had been scared, and if he'd ever seen anything like the night before. With that, my grandfather proceeded to tell him of walking through the hills when he was about the same age as my dad (around 1900) and seeing a large ball of fire roll down one hill, up the next, then disappear out of sight down the other side. He ran over to the closest place he'd seen it, and found nothing burnt. He did smell what he described as a weird burnt odor, however. With that he told my dad he had not been frightened the night before because he believed he had seen the Devil (the fireball) as a boy and lived through that experience.

Interesting Duke. Wonder if it was a craft, some kind of surveillance device or even a ghost light.

My grandad and great uncle were very serious guys, they worked as illegal SP bookmakers. One day in Sydney they were dropping off a large amount of cash for another bookie and they witnessed a spacecraft about 15ft across hover about 20ft next to them for a few minutes then shoot straight up at a great speed and disappear. This was back in the 1950's.They told my granma once and would never talk about again, when asked they still had a weird scared look and just nodded their heads. These guys were not the joking or attention seeking type.

Have you ever gone back to see if there were any other reports in Sydney about the time of their sighting? If there is a UFO data base for Oz similar to NUFORC's here, might be a good starting place.

Do you believe your grandfather assumed it was something otherworldly or due to his generation being less educated about a natural anomaly that occurs?

According to my Dad, he thought it was the Devil straight out of Hell. Having known my grandfather, I don't think anyone could have changed his mind regardless of what would have been presented to him to offer a more scientific explanation.

I remember watching a doco a couple of years ago about a UFO sighting by multiple people at a school here,I can't remember if it was in Sydney or what year but I think it was the 50's or 60's.I'll try and google some info.I 100% believe my relatives on this.

Not sure if you are asking me or Duke but they described this as a saucer shaped craft, whether it was alien or a government experiment, who knows but according to my grandmother the guys were in a very frightened state and would never speak about it again.
