New NBC show 'Debris' to dramatize UFO crash - Unexplained Mysteries
A new TV series will follow two agents from two different continents as they investigate a destroyed alien ship.
There seems to have been something of a resurgence of UFO-related TV shows in recent years with the History Channel's Project Blue Book, which debuted in January 2019, being renewed for a second season and now even NBC is getting in on the act with its upcoming show Debris.
The series will have something of an X-Files vibe given that it will follow the exploits of two agents with different mindsets who must investigate the wreckage of an alien spacecraft when it begins to have a mysterious effect on mankind.
Debris will be headed up by writer and executive producer Joel Wyman, who has previously worked on Fringe and Almost Human, as well as executive producer Jason Hoffs.
The idea that a UFO could crash (or be shot down) may seem commonplace in science-fiction today, but there was a time when such a concept would have seemed just as alien as the ship's occupants.
Perhaps most responsible for bringing the idea into the public consciousness was the infamous 1947 Roswell Incident which reportedly saw an unidentified craft crash on a ranch near Roswell, New Mexico before being covered up by the military.
While it didn't become a topic of major debate at the time, in later decades - and in particular following the release of the infamous 'alien autopsy' video in 1995 - the possibility of a cover-up became a popular conspiracy theory that persists to this day.
TV shows such as The X-Files also further helped to popularize the concept.
Debris is expected to premiere either later this year or in early 2021.
