Hi!

Numerology dates back to antiquity. The Name Number is calculated based on the relationship between the letters of the birth name and numbers. Since the modern English alphabet did not exist then and, furthermore, since there is no one-to-one relationship between the ancient alphabets and the modern English alphabet, who originated assigning the letter “a” to the number “1”?

Thank you!

Pythagorean system
This method can be referred to as either Western Numerology or Pythagorean Numerology. The Greek Philosopher, Pythagoras, is known as the father of Western Numerology. Pythagoras began his theory of numbers by discovering the numerical relationship between numbers and musical notes. He found that the vibrations in stringed instruments could be mathematically explained.[13][14] The Pythagorean method uses an individual’s name and date of birth. The name number reveals the individual’s outer nature. This is the personality that they present to the outside world. To start, you need to use the individual’s full name as written on their birth certificate. Then, each letter is assigned to a number one to nine, based on the ancient Pythagorean system. The numbers are assigned to letters of the Latin alphabet as follows:

  • 1 = a, j, s,
  • 2 = b, k, t,
  • 3 = c, l, u,
  • 4 = d, m, v,
  • 5 = e, n, w,
  • 6 = f, o, x,
  • 7 = g, p, y,
  • 8 = h, q, z,
  • 9 = i, r,

Chaldean system
The Chaldeans were ancient people who ruled Babylonia from 625–539 BC. Therefore, this system is also known as the Babylonian numerology system. Chaldean numerology is used to recognize the energy changes that occur when you or someone else speaks or thinks. The sound of someone speaking comes out in vibrations of different frequencies that affect the speaker and those around them. The Chaldean system uses the numbers 1-8. The number 9 is not used in the system because it is regarded as sacred due to its connection to infinity. The Chaldean system uses this 1-8 number system on the name that the individual is currently using because that is the energy that would currently be projected. Then, each letter is assigned to a number one to eight, based on the Chaldean numerology chart. The numbers are assigned to letters of the Latin alphabet as follows:

  • 1 = a, q, y, i, j
  • 2 = b, r, k
  • 3 = g, c, l, s
  • 4 = d, m, t
  • 5 = e, h, n, x
  • 6 = u, v, w
  • 7 = o, z
  • 8 = f, p

Pythagorean system ... Chaldean system ...
Dar Debi,

Thank you for your prompt reply.

But, my question stands: "Since the modern English alphabet did not exist in ancient times and, furthermore, since there is no one-to-one relationship between the ancient alphabets and the modern English alphabet, who originated assigning the letter 'a' to the number '1'?"

I suspect that, at thend of the day, there is no clear, well-duocumented path to the origin.

Words and numbers that become words are very much dependent on the language used. The concept of A being associated with one is a simple statement of its place in the order that was probably arbitrarily assigned to the alphabet at its initial inception. In Latin numbers, alpha is the first letter and omega is the last. Because of their placement, both words have become synonymous with the beginning or first and conversely the end or last. If the alphabet had used a different order this wouldn't have happened. Find out who first set in stone the ORDER of the alphabet and you will have your answer of who first associated A with one.

Most people seem to have a problem with the difference between numbers and numerals. To some extent, this is reflected here. A NUMBER reflects a quantity. A numeral is only a name that can be attached to things that have no numerical quantity. The numeral on a football players jersey is just an extension of his name and is an identifier with not quantitive value. The numerals drawn for a lottery have no quantitive meaning and the odds of 123456 being drawn in random order is exactly the same as any other 6 numerals because they are just symbols with no meaning. A and 1 are associated simply because they are both the first of a set of listed items that are always listed in that specific order.

Numbers are FACINATINGand as you delve into them you find all sorts of amazing things. 9 is an especially odd number that does a lot of rather odd things in its progressions. When you take those numbers and then after making a numerical calculation and then refer to the numbers in their numerical meanings you can use them just as you might tarot cards or tea leaves. You are looking into a random gathering and seeking order out of the chaos. If you have the gift the numerals/numbers will tell you things but the fact is that it is YOU and not the numbers that are doing this.

Looking at how everything in the universe fits together in perfection points directly to a creator who planned it in my opinion. Everything seems to breakdown to vibration and light. We give assigned letters or numbers to represent certain meanings, just as we do in speech. This is how we can communicate. The sacred geometry that seems to repeat in measurements and science is amazing. There is something in how our world is constructed and how we individually fit into it. Numerology is simply trying to read the blue print. My answer to your question is God, we are just expressing it in terms to communicate it.

Okay, prompted by Lynne I have tried my hand at calculating the five easiest numbers. I’m sharing them here in case anyone wants to issue any warning  in what they see. I agree that the definitions I’ve read thus far for the first three numbers are relevant but the later two are off...especially the last one.

Life Path = 5
Destiny = 2
Birthday = 22
Soul Urge = 5
Inner Dreams = 6.

I guess I have more reading and contemplating to do now.

I think your birthday should be a 4. You add to a single digit if I recall.
My birthday is 8/12/1960 = 27, 2+7=9

Here is a 9 life path description:
Number 9 is the number of Universal love, eternity, faith, Universal Spiritual Laws, the concept of karma, spiritual enlightenment, spiritual awakening, service to humanity, humanitarianism and the humanitarian, lightworking and lightworkers, leading by positive example, philanthropy and the philanthropist, charity, ...May 20, 2011
I think I’ve been on a spiritual hunt all my life. It’s shocking how there seems to be a pattern to our birth date and life path. Or maybe I’m just seeing things through the eyes of what I expect. It’s interesting to look at though.

If the adding of your birthdate numbers add up to 4 here’s what I found in a general description.
Number 4 resonates with the vibrations and energies of practicality, organization and exactitude, service, patience, devotion, application, pragmatism, patriotism, dignity, trust, worthiness, endurance, loyalty, mastery, building solid foundations, conservatism, determination, production and hard work.Feb 28, 2011
