My brother and I have been living in a house my parents have owned since the late 90's, it was built in the mid 90's. He and I rent from our parents. We have lived in that house on and off over the years and officially began renting it 3 or 4 years ago when my parents moved out of state but didn't want to sell the house (the rent is way cheaper than anything we could find in our area). There were a few things growing up in the house but nothing ever concerning or overly apparent, just little things.

My brother and I both believe in the paranormal, but parents don't really. I mean, my mom informed me all the weird stuff happening in a theater was a ghost known by the theater company growing up, but other than that, they think most of it is tall tales or people just messing with people. My brother believes and has seen things I have not, though I have seen things that he has not. I consider myself more of a skeptical believer. For example, I do believe the paranormal exists, I've seen it with my own eyes, but when watching some ghost hunting show on TV and show this "amazing" evidence of an orb or something, I do find my self thinking "that's it? that could be these ten things". Some of the evidence, yes gives me pause, but some has me wondering how these people call themselves investigators when EVERYTHING is proof of the paranormal.

Sorry for the long background, onto my new activity. As I mentioned, the house had some minor activity growing up, but again, nothing crazy. Recently though, things have gotten... weird. Both my brother and i have heard on separate occasions what sounds like someone slamming the lid to the toilet in the basement bathroom when no one is down there. We've heard it separately and together. Each time we have gone down to investigate and find nothing. A few times my dog (a shepherd mutt mix) has stared down the stairs for several minutes after the noise, but never alerts me to someone being down there. She just stares then eventually comes back to sit by me. We know this isn't the pipes or settling of the house since our family has lived here so long, we can easily identify them. The noises started before we had a cat, so we cannot blame it.

Another new noise that we cannot explain is that of the doorknobs. In our house, you have to give a door an extra tug to snag the lock into place, otherwise the animals can get into the rooms. We will be in our rooms or near them and hear the lock give the tale-tell "snick" of the doorknob being tugged into place. No one near the door and no other reason for it to happen. This hasn't happened as much but is still very weird.

The weirdest thing so far happened just this morning. My brother had though he left his prescription sunglasses at some store when he had been out shopping a few weeks ago. He was bummed, but he needed to prescriptions anyways so went ahead and got a new pair. This morning, according to him, he was searching his closet for some old game to send to a friend. He went into the side of his closet he hasn't touched since moving in 3 years ago. Under a pile of stuff he found his lost sunglasses. Not on top, or on the side, which I asked to see if he maybe flung them in there by mistake. Nope, underneath things with a clear layer of dust on the top. He and I just can't explain it.

I don't know if this means anything at all. If something that has been here the whole time is just changing tactics or if it is something new. I don't feel threatened or in any way in danger by all this but it just makes me so darn curious as to what it actually is. Any thoughts?

Welcome to the forum. In answer to are you in any way in danger from this activity? The answer is no. Actually, you describe a very typical story of an ongoing paranormal "haunting". Now, that doesn't mean you have ghosts running around your home. This could be poltergeist type activity that is actually generated from the living, to a variety of other causes.

The story of the glasses is a familiar one to me. We have had objects disappear and then reappear in places that are totally odd. Recently had keys disappear, and then reappear in a place just searched.

I would wait and see if it begins to get worse before getting too concerned. There is a sticky thread above with some basics on how to clear your home and do some protections, and you might want to try saging just to clear some of the energy out of there. Secondly, if you are a person of faith or not, use the St Michael's prayer you will find in that link every day, and even post it somewhere in your home. Keep us posted. It would be interesting to see if anything further happens. Please know that we are always here to help you should you need it.

I feel you and your brother are open to the paranormal, you maybe more so, and it helps to be a bit skeptical to differ from paranormal or just mundane causes.I give little time to these TV shows, even if the people are genuine(which is doubtful).I feel they belittle genuine events and people that are truly open.Good advice from Debi(always). It doesn't sound bad to me as long as you don't fear or engage with it.

Hi and welcome. Debi and Oz are right on in their advice in my opinion. I have a question for you though. Have you done any remodeling or purchased any used furniture? Activity can be stirred up with remodeling and also some items have attachments. Just throwing that out there.

Welcome to the forum.
Nothing to worry about yet - just keep an eye on things. Toilet lids and doors being closed properly is useful, and your brother could probably do with another set of glasses anyway.

It does sound like an attachment to objects type of thing if you have older furniture, but the glasses thing is typical of the little folk - who tend to come inside during the winter, and leave again in spring. Especially if you have woodland around you.
What season did the glasses disappear?

My house (I inherited from my parents) is full of activity. The activity began when I became a caregiver for my parents. When my dad was alive (he preceded my mom in death) I would see objects move around me. I saw his wheelchair pivot while he was standing near it, without touching it. When my mom and I relocated my dad to a veterans home, a presence followed me there: I was at a McDonalds, and I saw three cups (behind the counter) being pulled out (one at a time) and hitting the floor.

After my mom died, I heard her cry twice in the house. About one week after her death, I discovered her bathroom items neatly placed under my bathroom sink...I think this was her way of saying "the house belongs to you." I am close to my mom and continue to talk to her. I also discovered batteries relocated in the house...in matching pairs!

I've walked behind footfalls in the hallway. I've had my comforter tugged gently. I've heard children talking. I've had the walls make a tapping sound and doors closing.

After my dad died, shadows would appear near doorways; he stood by the doorways when he had Alzheimer's. When this happens, I invite the presence in the room.

I have seen footprints and handprints on the soft toilet seat covers. I took pictures.

I once had a playful entity; I held up a disposable camera and said "have fun with it." I discovered it hidden the next day.

Sometimes it gets loud in the house. At bedtime, I ask for quiet...and the noises stop.

I tend to think that these entities will seek you out if they are interested in you. Something tugged on my hoodie (from behind) at a Lego store in a mall. I've had my hair touched while I was awake in bed. I was walking in the mall and a woman's outfit was swaying on the hanger; I put my hands all around it and it continued to sway.

Sometimes I think these entities are lonely and they just want to be accepted. They may miss the interactions with people.

I befriended a groundskeeper at the memorial park where I had my parent's ashes placed. He told me he found a small toy car....and took it home. That night, the drums began to play; his daughter tossed the toy car in the river the next day and the drums stopped playing. I've experienced apparitions, sounds, and lights while I have walked in that park.

Another groundskeeper told me a story about a person's ashes that were stored in the attic of the office; the door to the attic was knocking from the inside of the attic. The knocking ceased when the ashes were removed from the attic.

When I lived in Redding, CT, I used to drive through wooded areas where I could see glimpses of soldiers in old fashioned military uniforms, crouched in the shrubbery at the sides of the roads.

Wow you have a lot going on but it seems you’re comfortable with it. If that’s not the case we give you advice.

I hope those are not souls stuck in time. Do you think you are seeing back in time or reading the energy left there? Or ghosts?
