DO YOU FEED THE BIRDS? SQUIRRELS? ANY WILDLIFE?

I ONCE FORGOT TO CHANGE OUT THE HUMMINGBIRD WATER AND IT FERMENTED, LEAVING ME WITH A FEW DRUNK BIRDS OUT THERE...ONE HANGING UPSIDE DOWN! I'VE ALSO HAD WOODPECKERS AT MY WINDOW LETTING ME KNOW THEIR FEEDER WAS EMPTY! TELL ME YOUR WILDLIFE STORIES!

When I was pregnant with my son back in 95 it was November, seen a family of javelinas (wild pigs) And I am just watching them because they were like 10ft from me. I seen baby one so VERY CUTE! Down in Tucson and I put my hand down and the baby came up to me and I pet it. The mom of course was watching. My mom second hubby said don't touch them filthy animals, they will bite you. Said if they were they would of. He said they are ugly animals why bother. Well he left out threw the front door to get to his pathfinder and the male charged him, I laughed my butt off!
I said well I guess he hated the smell of you!

Once while living in Florida, we had just turned in for the night when we heard this really loud knocking sound under the house. Since we didn't have a basement, I was pretty much alarmed! So we got up to investigate. We were new to the area and it was rural, so I couldn't tell if it was an animal or a person who had wandered onto our property. My husband started walking around to the back of the house, and I stayed behind him. There, in the moonlight, were two opossums! Apparently they had been fighting because one of them was all bloody, and they both staggered like two drunken men in a bar fight. I guess they were fighting over who would have the privilege of raising a family underneath our house, Lol.

LOL That reminds me of something that happened when my mom was visiting when I first moved here. (My mom was not a nature person AT ALL.) There was some bumping under the house, and she got totally freaked out over it in the middle of the night. She decided it was something large that might break through the flooring and come and get her. My mom, Roberta, was known as Grandma Bert, so we henceforth called it "Bert's Beast." Turned out to be a stray cat, but in my mom's mind it was coming to get her.

When I was stationed down in Ft Huachuca there were javelina that would hang around the MP station and the base gates. The MPs would feed them and even named some of them. One early morning I was out for a run and I heard weird thunking noises. I turned my head and saw a big javelina running alongside me, I was actually pretty scared. Part of me wanted to run faster, but I didn't know how it would react. I was just in shorts and a t-shirt, that thing could have torn me pieces. Would it attack me while I was running? Would it attack me if I stop running? After a few minutes it turned off the road and into the desert.

It was just looking for some company! lol

I feed the birds -- I TRY to feed the bird's in the Winter. Generally that crack head squirrel has the feed gone before I get back to the house and it becomes quite a screaming match then, with me and the birds on one side and a very 'I can't here you' squirrel on the other. I have to pull the feeder's by May though... were there are birds there be snake's. We have copperheads and timber rattlers so I don't push it.

I have discovered a very cheap and easy solution to the squirrel vs bird feeder battle. Remember the old toy called a Slinky? They still sell them at the dollar store. It is a metal coil that bounces. Well, you slide it over the pole and tie or open the end to secure it at the top. The Slinky hangs like a big spring around the pole. When the squirrels try to climb they can’t get traction. It works amazingly well.
