Vacations

Mrs Duke refuses to fly anymore, and doesn't like to drive/ride more than eight hours. For the past few years we've gone with our daughter's family on vacation, this year (in three weeks) we're going to Saugatuck, Michigan. Not a place I'd have picked, but it's supposed to be beautiful.

I don't travel in the summer. My vacation will be in October, to Chicago. I've been going there the last few years because I have a friend in Chicago, and two others who live within a two hour drive of the city, so it's easier to see them all this way. Unfortunately, I won't be there for a week like I have in the past because my funds are limited. I'm going for a long weekend in October.

I don't care for travel anymore - just burnt I guess. Someone else here (sorry, spacey if it happened more than 48 hours ago) was talking about hitchhiking when he was young... I did that - Child of the 60's and early 70's that I am. I left home at 15 and like every good Okie - stuck out my thumb and headed for Cali. I meant to go to San Francisco, but wound up in Oakland - I could tell you some stories on that, but won't. After that got boring I stuck my thumb out and headed back to Oklahoma, but wound up in South Carolina. lol I spent about 4 years criss-crossing America... all by thumb. You just couldn't do that now... Probably wasn't smart to do it then, but hey, I said it I was a Flower Child. Half that time I didn't even own a pair of shoes... Oh, and I had tiny bells sewn into the seam's of my jean's - two pair, bought at army-navy surplus store and yes they were bell bottoms. I tinkled when I walked. brahahahaa.

I spent two years in Hawaii in my 20's, then the next decade my husband and I drove an express truck. For ten years every summer I loaded my kid's into that baby Mac and here we would go. We hit every state and most of Canada - Maine and Vancouver Island were my favorites. I just started to hate, hate, hate traveling. You can't blow me out of this Cabin now. If you aren't graduating or having a baby or terminally ill or dead -- you know where my door is. :smirk:

I’ve heard it is beautiful. I am from eastern MI but I visit that side of the state once a year. I go to Kalamazoo for a huge fiber festival. It is everything to do with crafting with natural fibers and of course lots of sheep. MI is a beautiful state in the summer. We have 4-5 good months. I’ve been told that Saugatuck is all about boating and shopping.

Two years ago, we took the kids on a month-long road trip out west in our camper. We stayed a week in Rapid City, a week in Yellowstone, and then a week down in Canon City, Colorado. The purpose was to show the kids how large just the US is, and not to waste their youth stuck in one place.

Last year the boy and I did a 9-day road trip retracing most of the original route (skipping Canon City). We'll be doing the same this summer.

During the original trip I found the single most peaceful place I've ever been. Made it a point to stop again last year, and will again this year. Without my current legal troubles, I'd be out there more frequently:
