About the age of 10-11 I would head for the local swimming pool for the last session on a Saturday afternoon. Sessions were about 40 minutes so we had to time our swimming arriving about 5pm the last session on a Saturday being very quiet and usually just my friends and myself being the only people in the pool.

Now I say swimming My friends could I swim couldn't I just splashed a lot and had fun.

On the way home we'd put the wet towels on our heads held in place with equally wet swimming trunks arab style and hit the local chippie.

A chippie is a chip shop chips being fries in America. Everything is deep fried in those days including pizza wich is a new and novel addition to our cuisine.

So deep fried flaky pastry steak pie (pastry no longer flaky), chips (fries), and a pickled onion we head home and if we were rich had a Mars Bar to finish.

Home in time for Dr Who on the TV, dad would have gone to a different chippie to get the rest of the family fish and chips and I got to eat the skin and batter my sisters didn't like from the fish.

Saturday's were fun :)

An uplifting thread! Good memories fill us with such positive energy! I shall add on mine tomorrow.

This is a bit rude but funny. My stepdad was a very snobbish, cranky type guy,he was a golf pro and Mayor of our area. One night he walked out into the loungeroom half asleep,he'd been drinking wine all arvo and passed out till night. He had his boxer shorts on and there was a wet patch in the front. He kept saying in a horrified voice 'whats this sticky stuff?'and pointing to his shorts.Eventually mum went over, looked at the stain, wiped her finger over it and put her finger in her mouth.Marmalade, she spoke in a serious voice. My brother and I rolled around the floor hysterical with laughter for ages.Stepdad Ron never got the joke.

While I'm on funny things in childhood and picking on my stepdad. He had been complaining for days about a blister on his arm,it was a dark red large pimple type thing with hair on it.He was saying the pain from it was shooting up his arm and into his brain.Mum sent him to the doctors mainly to shut up his whinging. After poking at the sore for a while the doc came back with a scalpel,he cut in level with his skin, the lump popped off and fell on the floor. It was a Tarzan jube,a kind of cough lolly that had stuck to dads arm and collected hair and fluff on it.The poor bloke never lived that down.

Back in the day nobody walked a dog the door was opened and off they'd go coming and going whenever they felt like it. My golden lab Rupert used to buy his own dog food, mother would wrap the exact money in paper and off he'd go to the store bringing back a tin of dog food in his jaws.

This worked well until he came home one day with a pack of sausages he hadn't paid for, no idea where he got them.

The sausages were great though we were poor.

I guess the best memories for any child is before we realised life was nothing as awesome as we thought it would be before we became old enough to live it. I thought everyone was having an awesom time as a kid i had to go to bed early and others got to smoke cigaretes and drive cars and go to school and or work, as a child i remember thinking that would be so awesome being an innocent kid you dont realise the responsibility that comes along with things and you think money grows on trees and chocolate bars fall out of grown ups butts when ever they need or want to eat one. Well, im glad they dont fall out ppls butts BUT you know what I mean. hehehe... sorry. I'm complicated.

A 'chippie' here is a carpenter.

Same here and a spark is an electrician. Limited menu in a chippie but all unhealthy :)

Chips (fries), fish, sausage, black pudding and haggis are the staples. all battered and deep fried. You might find a steak pie, Scottish mince pie, pizza (not like anything you'd think was a pizza), and all deep fried.

In Ireland they'l say chipper for a chip shop.

Electrician is a sparky here. That food sounds alright, but blood pudding and haggis sounds a bit irony tasting for me.I don't think I'd be game to try.
