Talesin. Just a wild guess regrading the flute you heard. I have 60 foot pine tree. When the wind blows hard, it sings. Iguess that is what the poets and songwriters talk about with the wind whistling through the pines. Nonetheless, you are a really good writer, and enjoyed it.

Lol thanks, I wasn't trying to make it sound like a novel. When I feel like an experience is important, I just try to be as descriptive as possible so people can form their best guesses.

I know what you mean about the wind whistling between trees. I've heard that, too. This one sounded more like a crafted wind instrument. And when it changed pitch, it was a perfect note each time. I hope I hear it again.

About the streak of light, it looked like it might have been in the house. Maybe someone walked past the window holding their cell phone, but it was really bright, and there's not much traffic at that time around here.

I know this post is over a year old, but it was the only thing I could find that describes exactly what I’m experiencing right now.
It started around 12am. The sound of an old wooden flute, almost sounding shriekish, woke me from my dreaming peaceful sleep and now it’s 1:23am. The sound is definitely moving around. It comes close and moves back again and again. My dogs definitely heard it cause it woke them too, but they don’t seem concerned and my cat is coming in and out of an open window and she doesn’t seem bother by the sound at all.
It first started of as the same notes being played over and over again, then it changed and became a more complex song. It goes from high to low both in volume and sound.
I’ve never heard this before after living here in the mountains for almost 2 years now.
The Full Moon is Waning. I’d say it’s getting closer to New. I saw it earlier today as a half moon.
I’m very curious about what this could be.
I don’t have the bravery to peek outside. I’m blind and a bit vulnerable right now, so I’m not certain about flashing lights. As for now, whatever it is,I don’t think it knows I’m here.
If it were “fairies” then I would imagine they’re having a sort of ritual. That’s what the music sounds like....as if they’re invoking something or performing some sort of rite.
Not so much music to dance to. It’s too eerie for that.

One night a couple weeks ago, when my window was open because it was cool, I was just getting ready to get into bed when I heard a strange sound. I stopped moving so that I could hear it better. It sounded like what I thought it was: a flute. I was dumbfounded. It wasn't just a flute, but it sounded mysterious, almost like you would expect Merlin to play in order to lure Arthur out of the monastery at night as a boy so they could go on adventures and teach him lessons. This is what Merlyn did in the book The 21 Lessons of Merlyn.

To make it even stranger, I could tell it was moving around, because as I crept closer to the open window as I hid behind the blinds, it sounded farther away. I was just thinking to myself, "wow, am I really hearing this?!" I've never heard anything like this before. I was cautious, because I had no idea what it could be, but still, I wanted to go out and check it out. It didn't feel scary, but I'm a careful person. I think about worst-case scenarios, like stepping outside on the front steps, only to have my soul sucked away by whatever or whoever it was.

Well, eventually, I did give in to my curiosity, and I opened the front door a wee bit, and peeked out - and listened. I didn't hear it anymore at this point. I waited there, looking out into the dark neighborhood, trying to see if I could catch anything moving, but I didn't.

Finally, when I felt that the threat level was low, I stepped out onto the front step. I was prepared to scurry back inside in a split second if I had to, but as I sat there, I happened to look right at a window of a neighbor's house across the street. There was a mysterious white streak of light that went one way, then quickly turned around and went back the other way and vanished.

I also remember slightly smelling apples when I was listening by the window before I went out. I had been melting some scented wax that evening, but not apple.

I have no clue what the heck that was all about. I hadn't told anyone about this, because of how crazy it is. What do you guys think? I don't expect anyone to believe me.

Edit: Oh, and I don't know how relevant this is, but it happened around the time of the full moon.

Perhaps cloud reflection or diffusion made it look bigger that it should be ?

That's neat. I think a fairy or gnome got through somewhere out there. I had one time heard a singing of someone with this soft tune and comforting one. I had a huge stomach pain and was lying there in that pain for an hour, or so. This comforting light, female voice did some kind of tune. Not words to it but just a melody. I will never forget it. I kept thinking where is that coming from. Wasn't our tv. He had it on sports. Or some such thing. But it was a tune I won't forget. Or soothing one. Like to sooth me to heal up. I sure need that sound now. But never heard it again. Just that night. I can't explain it. It was nice though. To have that minute with that voice. I love this story here too. Neat on a gnome and who would play that flute that time of night. Not many are out that time either. Cool stories here.

Welcome Safire. Do you live alone , you mentioned you live in the mountains, sound can echo and travel far under those conditions. Perhaps someone was playing an instrument somewhere ?

I was in such pain and maybe someone felt it and thought to comfort me. It was so soothing. I really appreciated it. Did help me to relax and I got better. That house had some weird things in it. I think this house has less ghostly things. It's suppose to be blessed land. Maybe that's why. I feel really safe here. Thanks Lynn. I thought so too.
