As we move into fall and starting to think about Christmas I thought I'd ask y'all what is traditional for you and family. In the UK the usual turkey and additions but I was never much interested as the farmed variety is dry and tasteless. A few years ago I cooked a goose which was the traditional main Christmas day meal way back to Victorian times but is neglected these days (and expensive), no competition, try goose and you'll never want to eat turkey again.

In between Yule celebrations my go to fowl would be duck, not popular here and not hunted but I can get it easily. Chicken...

My summers as a kid were spent on the grandparents farm in Ireland and for the occasional Sunday dinner a chicken would be on the menu after it was running about that morning. Nothing I can get in a supermarket (or free range or some other description to make you think that it was a happy chook), will ever taste like that did, never needed a sauce just on the plate and a wee bit of salt was all.

So duck and goose it is, any other suggestions, gonna stick with Christmas turkey? Do you do that at thanksgiving too?

Same here, Paul. That seems to be the tradition in this area. Although I do love me some duck! Nobody else does so I rarely get it.

Duck . . . duck . . . . duck . . . GOOSE ! Oh, sorry, I thought that we were playing the children's game.

We usually have a medium sized turkey and ham for both occasions since we feed an extended family.

But question for you LG, I've had duck several times but never goose. Can you give me your opinion on how goose and duck compare?
