College Football

Khalil Tate looked lackluster in the loss to BYU last week.

He did indeed, but first game in a new system under a new coordinator can affect even the best players. Tate is still an extraordinary talent.

The weather across a large part of the country is abysmal today, here in Ohio it's monsoon like. Rain like this can become the great equalizer between teams of even significant talent differential. Will be interesting to see how many upsets/close calls with have today.

Agree, but the BYU quarterback was also under a new coordinator and new system. Magnum looked the much better QB, at least in that game.

Yep. In fact I think Mangum is on either his third or fourth coodinator. He's also 25 years old I think, having red shirted and taken a two year LDS mission. Personally I think Mangum is a better QB than Tate, but Tate is a superior athlete playing QB.

Tate looks to be another outstanding player who will have trouble treansfering his college success to the NFL, unless he's willing to and capable of playing another position. Great QB potential in the CFL, however, if the NFL doesn't work out.

For many years, week three of the college football season was known as "Upset Saturday." Teams played three non-conference games to start the season, with the last of the three usually against lightly considered opponents the week before starting conference play. As a result, teams tended to look past those opponents and upsets occurred. Things have changed somewhat in recent years, a twelfth game has been added and some leagues begin conference play in the first couple weeks. Still, there are enough mismatched non-conference games in week three that we see upsets.

The game I'm most looking forward to this weekend is Boise St @ Oklahoma St. Gone are the days of Boise sneaking up on P5 schools, and they have seldom been able to get home & home series. So Boise usually winds playing P5 schools on the road, or at a neutral site. OSU is often over looked as a national power, but they've won ten games in four of the past five years, and averaged just under ten wins/season over the last ten years. OSU is a slight favorite, which I understand playing at home, but I'm surprised the over/under on this game is only 64.5.

I'm also going to be watching Hawaii @ Army. Hawaii has started 3-0, and if they can win at West Point, they stand a great chance of becoming bowl eligible (6 wins) by the end of Sept. I don't think that has ever happened before. Despite Hawaii having a reputation historically of not having great success as a road team, they have the advantage here of having already played option team Navy just two weeks ago. Army is a slight home favorite, but I like Hawaii to win out right.

Good games indeed.

My Utah has a tough game against Washington. Fingers crossed, lol:eek:

I would have driven to Northern Ill to see Utah last week, but the weather was monsoon like. I'm getting too old for that stuff.

Btw, my goal is to see all 130+ FBS schools play in person before I go over the rainbow. I've seen 67 so far, should be at least 70 by the end of the season. (I've also been to at least as many games seeing lower divisions, NAIA, and JuCo games.) With the exception of WVU and Pitt, I've seen every FBS team within five hours drive, and have flown to games as far away as Washington St, BYU, and USC. Doubt I'll make all 130+, but 80-85 is probably doable if I don't get hit by a bus.

People are sleeping on the Boise state vs Oklahoma state game, Oklahoma state has the #1 offense right now and Boise has a very good defense this game will decide either teams season.

Also Ed Oliver is looking like a reincarnation of Ndamukong Suh

Well, BYU knocked off #6 Wisconsin !!
University of North Texas is beating up SEC Arkansas. Go Mean Green!!

Throw Hornibrook on the pile with Stave and the rest who can't take the Badgers to the Promised Land :(
