Guns, Ammo, and Gun Gear

while a 9mm carbine can be fun to play with, in a true survival situation I would rather have a much more powerful round in a rifle platform. the effective range of 9mm in a rifle is only about 75 - 100 yards (if your lucky) before it loses its energy. the effectiveness compared to the weight of the rifle doesn't weigh out, just not worth the effort of the extra weight to have to carry..... its good to try to simplify things as much as possible, but when you need a rifle, a rifle is what you should have.....one that can hit from a loooong ways off....lol
No doubt .308, 5.56, 7.62x54R are better rounds and you will have more stopping power and range, of course. What happens years down the road though when your stockpiles are running out, it's becoming next to impossible to scavenge for those rounds but 9mm is still plentiful.

Everyone wants to have an unlimited supply of bullets but .308 is expensive and 7.62x54r is getting harder and more expensive to find already. Just saying 9mm on a ak platform will be good for CQB self defense and hunting. very little recoil will be an advantage to accurate drilling of the target. Yes 9mm has more to be desired but also a longer barrel will result in even higher velocities.

talking years down the road and still having to scavenge for ammo, food, etc... then youre talking about a complete social breakdown, a complete economic collapse or an apocalyptic type scenario....sorry, but scavenging for ammo will be the least of your concerns in that case.....
its easy for ppl to imagine, and even begin to romanticize such an event but that is not how it will play out, never has and never will.... if you ever get the chance to visit a third world, war torn, economically collapsed cesspool of a country you will see that very quickly the "warlords" will arise and the population will be controlled and at the mercy of the criminal element. its nice to think you can prepare and defend your "community" but the truth is unless you have firsthand knowledge and experience in what and how to react you will be a victim and taken care of in very short order. lets hope and pray that that type situation never comes along.

So there is no hope, no one will survive, and everyone who got the missile warning in January should've blown their brains out.

Never said there's no hope or that no one would survive, simply said that it would not be a romanticised version of mad max, or whatever the sci fy flavor of the month might be....real life is a little different. Hero's are few and far between, in a situation like this it would be as hard to find compassion and civilized behavior as it would be the bullets you spoke of. My example of a war torn collapsed country is a good example of how war lords take control of disaster events, and it never fails to happen, power corrupts ppl.... Even in places like south america with the cartels, once corrupt individuals take control its very hard to regain freedom.....that is why its more important to be active in everyday events and political choice as it is in prepping for when things may go bad....and if they do go bad to regain control in an expedient manner......if it comes down to scavenging years later, then yes, it may then be too late.

There's a million different things can happen. Each with key differences, massive earthquake, weaponized earthquakes, weaponized hurricanes, super volcano eruption, gravitational axis flip, massive emp either natural or not natural, nuclear war, biological or chemical attack, contagion, zombies, every human suddenly disappeared, nuclear meltdown, industrial accident, anything could happen and lead to any outcome. I agree you have to take the knowledge we have learned from war or disaster.

Prepare mentally, prepare physically, get your family prepared, get your equipment prepared and keep learning. I try and learn from as many different places as possible of course that includes veterans. One of my favorite people to listen to on this stuff is practical prepper and he uses his experiences from Iraq. Very useful. You never know what will happen, will you have to crack so heads along the way, no doubt. Will you probably die in the end? Maybe, but what if you don't, and you could save your family rather than offing them? Billions will die. Whether or not you plan for it, it is coming. Water shortages are coming from climate change. Imagine the hundreds of thousands of refugees from Katrina now imagine hundred of millions of refugees looking for water when India starts having big problems.... We are in for it. We have massive global civil unrest on the horizon even without weaponized weather.

Please, don't get me wrong. I applaud you for learning as much as possible. Its great that you are trying to learn what you can to survive whatever comes along. I was just saying that a temporary disaster is much much different than what was brought up with the years down the road scenario.... That would be a whole different ballgame, one that we must do whatever we can to prevent from happening to begin with., most disasters are temporary and are survivable with a clear head and proper training, others like nuclear war can be ( hopefully ) prevented by being politically active and aware of what's going on in the world, hopefully cooler heads and senceability will prevail......many differant levels of survival prepping, from the everyday stuff to the eotwawki, let's just hope, and do what we can beforehand to not reach that level.

Thank you for that, Paul.

Let me just jump in here, which I rarely do on these threads, to offer a different perspective and why Paul's words are so true. Prevention is something I have prayed for since August of 2015....that was when my grandson was diagnosed as a Type 1 diabetic, totally dependent on insulin. In the case of disaster, he cannot live long without refills of his insulin. Short term, we have enough available to sustain for a month. Beyond that....he dies. Plain, simple, he dies. He's 12.

Now, we add ME to this mix. Guess what gang? I just entered the dead zone. As someone now dependent on electricity to make my oxygen levels work, you take that away and I have 20 hours of tank time left. I die. Case closed.

Prevention is always step and goal #1. How do you pray to prevent man made earthquakes and hurricanes though that indiscriminately murder thousands?

Can't stop that, but you pray there is help in the wings for those affected. What I see is the mess down in the islands hit by this summer's hurricanes. The amount of people still affected there is scary.

Hey, I agree with prepping. One must be ready for emergency. I just know some people who seem to think it would be a bit fun to trial it for a few months. Those people don't get it.
