The house of a wealthy man who lived in the ancient city of Pompeii before it was buried by ash | Daily Mail Online

  • During the conservation work, new finds were uncovered at a private house known as the 'House of Jupiter'
  • The house was already partly excavated between the 18th and 19th centuries
  • Archaeologists have uncovered yet more frescoes and remains that give us an insight into everyday life

That's very interesting. I'm hoping to visit Pompeii, Herculaneum and Vesuvius in October.

Seeing the people in their death state makes it all so real. Clinging to their possessions and family with no hope. So sad and tragic.

Yes, what a sad ending and a horrific way to die - gasses, heat, burning, - thank God it would have been quick.

Great story. It's great when they discover or rediscover these ancient remains. During the 18th and 19th centuries before proper archaeological techniques were developed and used, "artifact hunters" just tore through a site looking for treasures basically. Now if it is done properly, much more can be learned from a site than just the remaining artifacts. In fact Pompeii is a great example of this, because if they hadn't realized the ash they were digging through actually contained these cavities where bodies once were, they would have been forever lost. Fortunately they were able to develop a way to preserve the cavities and show what the cavity contained - the bodies.
