Miscellaneous EDC Gear

Who here keeps one of these in their preps? I got this Baofeng UV-5R a couple days ago and programmed it for the FRS channels and my local weather. It’s even got an FM radio in it :) I was hoping to use it as a scanner as well but it’s pretty hard to find the first responder frequencies in this area. I guess they don’t use UHF/VHF.

I expected it to be a little bigger. But the smaller the better right?

Do they still even make scanners these days? They were a hoot back in the day, got one back in the late 80s. We could listen to our neighbors' cordless phone calls, found out one of them was cheating on her husband. Apparently security was not considered on the first generation cordless phones.

Well if you’re using the amateur band you’re not allowed to use encrypted or encoded transmissions anyways! That what you get for cheating :D

I don't know if they still make scanners, but I know on my internet radio I can get all the local police and fire, and even larger cities like LA make their broadcasts available for some reason. Kind of cool to listen in late at night, especially on weekends!

I don't yet, but I plan to. I am just waiting to take the test and get my license, then I will know a little more what I am looking for in a set-up. My brother and I are going to get our licenses together, and then set it up so we can talk to each other from our houses as practice. I have also thought about getting radio certified in the Coast Guard and add the marine radio in the mix too. :anchor:

I’m studying for the test. Might see if there are any amateur clubs in my area. I’ll pm you my callsign once I do the test and all that.
