While EDC can just mean the items you normally carry to work each day, EDC can also be much more. We've already talked about EDC and guns, and an EDC mindset may take it the next step and cover even more preparedness and survival items in your EDC arsenal.

The sky is the limit when you're talking about being as prepared as possible for a natural or man-made disaster, and how you plan to prepare for the worst while hoping for the best. No one wants calamity to strike, but a lot more people today are becoming mentally prepared for the possibility, and acquiring the skills, training and equipment to be as ready as possible. Part of this preparedness would also include things like bugout bags, EDC bags, first-aid kits, etc.

This thread will address this preparedness, and include links and information for these topics. Thanks to jadamz for the thread suggestion!

How to use a map and basic navigation are good skills to have...... Hopefully most of us here are of the age before GPS and cell phones and know how to read a map....lol.....but the younger generations have only depended on their cell phones for directions and that may not always be an option...... I'm not saying you have to be able to give a 10 digit grid coordinate, but at least learn where north south, east ,and west are..lol.....and how to read both a standard and a topographic map, and how to shoot an azimuth on a lensatic compass.

Great skill to have, Paul! You're right, most younger people would have no idea how to read maps! I hope it never happens, but if we did ever get hit with an EMP (Electromagnetic Pulse), GPS, cell phones - EVERYTHING we rely on - GONE! Then it's back to the Stone Age. Even if just a few of the major grids in the US were hit by something, there would be tremendous chaos.

I have some map and compass skills. They need some polishing up but give me a map and no compass, and I’ll figure out north no problem.

MAybe stuff about HAM radio?
Yes! This is something I have been wanting to do for years. If the power goes out, HAM operators are the first people to get important communications through. This would be a great skill to have.

You might want to join a club. You could hook up with people and practice. A lot of people are very nervous broadcasting, so it does take some getting used to.

Also there are some very good magazines-not sure if this is the right place to put them, but Backwoods Home Magazine is a good one. Also anything by Survival.com aka HOODS WOODS. Wish I had taken a class with this guy before he died. i have most of his videos and his wife is pretty cool too. There are a lot of primitive skills.survival courses you can take at wilderness schools. You get dumped into the woods and learn how to survive it all.
