Your Brain Hallucinates Your Conscious Reality

How Does Consciousness Happen?

Right now, billions of neurons in your brain are working together to generate a conscious experience – not just any conscious experience, but your own experience of the world around you and of yourself within it. So how does this actually happen?

According to neuroscientist, Anil Seth, we’re all hallucinating all of the time. And when we agree about our hallucinations, we call it ‘reality’. So how can we understand this ‘reality’ of consciousness better?

“As with life, so with consciousness, once we start explaining its properties in terms of things happening inside brains and bodies the apparent insolubility of what consciousness is, starts to fade away.”

Understanding the biological basis of conscious experience is one of the great challenges for 21st century science. This fabulously mind blowing, disorienting talk may leave you questioning the very nature of your existence.

What if when we astral project, it is our brain making electric connections with our surroundings rather than other Neurons or nerve endings, and once there is no brain, there is no consciousness left to connect with and observe the universe in the second person?

I see your reasoning Charleh but I believe in the soul being the seat of our consciousness. I think our mind may be the radio and the signal comes from our soul which may be non local. Thus our consciousness and personality lives on with or without the body.

Lynne, I like your input.
By the way I mainly put that theory in there just to trigger a better remark from someone. I do that sometimes. Just write something for the sole purpose of provoking people to brainstorm.

Maybe it's the soul that's eternal.
But I'm gonna make a reference I've heard a lot of LSD users experienced; Ego death.
Basically under the influence of entheogenics, you can reach a state where you completely cut off from the outside. No touch, sight, taste, you cent even feel your body. Sometimes you can still think to yourself in this catatonic state but everything is black. Actually I called my sister just now (occasionally takes psilocybin mushrooms) and she explained ego death since she's experienced it before.

Things like this and a few other phenomena that I don't have time to explain in one post leave me to believe that mind, ego and soul are all three completely different things/phenomena, but primarily seated in the mind and heart.

As a very experienced former "hippie" who's done her fair share of fun drugs in the past, I have to disagree with you, Charleh. We are receivers, our brains receive our spirit/soul and interpret it in this world. The soul is eternal, IMHO.

Aaand I've only had one cup of coffee so far so I shall delay trying to answer further at this time.

So in essence, our soul isn't even planted in our bodies/ minds? Don't worry take your time :fuelpump: (let's pretend that's a coffee pump lol)

OK, I actually answered Charleh on Chat thread, but I'm copy/pasting it to the conversation here so it's not left hanging!

You mention "Ego Death." Ego is what you think you are...what you think of self. It's not who you really are, but who you think you have created as a persona. As you brought up Ego Death under drug influence, as a former hippie (a real one who lived on a real commune and all), I have done my fair shair of mind altering drugs in my past. Yup, it can wipe out that ego if you go deep enough, leaving you in a state of simple "being." Not all drugs take you into that same state, BTW. There are scarier places, and as I've said many times here I do NOT recommend any of them.

You were talking about what the soul/spirit/ego is and where it lives. Well, here's my take on that.

We are infinite souls in a finite body here on this plane. I don't believe the soul is manifested within the brain/heart etc. I believe we are like a radio receiver. Our Soul, or true self, is experienced by this brain and body. We are eternal beings/souls, and our true self is simply picked up by this brain and body to experience this world. I will give you an example of something I've seen over the years that has convinced me of this.

I worked in nursing for over 30 years. I watched as Alzhiemer patients slowly lost brain cells and then their core selves seemed to simply disappear. They became much like walking empty shells unable to even tell you who they were. They became unable to recognize people they loved, or sometimes even remember how to do simple tasks such as brushing their teeth or feeding themselves. Yet, as they were on their death beds and family gathered, time after time after time I watched as they had very sudden moments of complete clarity! They would sit up, talk to family like they'd simply been off on a trip, recognized everyone, said their goodbyes and shared their love before they left this world. It was like someone "returning" to the body to say those goodbyes.

This got to be so often, I finally asked one of my favorite patients on her "return" where she had been! Did she realize she hadn't been able to talk or to function! She looked right at me and told me, "Well, honey, I have been off with family on the other side, you know. I wanted to come back to this body long enough to say goodbye to family before I left for good."

Now, I truly feel that the soul can leave the body, and the body can still "function". I believe that's what these patients did and do. So, the soul is not part of the brain or body...it simply uses it for the experience here on this plane.

Well said Debi. Perhaps what is called ego death is in reality shutting off our radio receiver (brain) . Thus we are acting on just our life energy or spirit disconnected from our soul. We are not aware of our memories or self awareness?

I have never used these type of substances so I'm only speculating.
